I recently purchased a “new” carburetor for my 1947 2N. It was one of the black ones that sells for around $146 at many web sites and TSC. The thing was cracked and leaked gas and would not run without the choke at idle. I fought with that dang thing for a couple of months without success. Since I have previously tried to rebuild an original M/S TSX 241 and had all kinds of trouble getting the jets out (lots of swearing and mauled brass in the bottom of the carb), and now a new one that also doesn’t work, I was at a loss for what to do next. Along comes my best friend on the forum – GB in MT. Gary agreed to build one for me out of a used carb and a rebuild kit. I just received it on Friday and it really makes the old Beast much more usable. I no longer have a puddle of gas on the floor under the tractor and it will run well at idle with no choke! This one also has some improvements over the original such as a drain cock instead of the plug in the bottom of the bowl. This carb is better than new!

I wanted all of the folks who read this forum to know what a great guy and friend Gary is and to publicly thank him for all the help he has given me both on and off the forum ---

Don't know Gary well, but I take him to be a guy that would go out of his way to help anyone.
Glad to hear good things about him, even if he doesn't like Wood Duck poop.

Whoa up guys.......Thanks for the very nice words....but...I'm just a guy that likes to help if I can. I'm not really a miracal worker....can't heal the sick, nor walk on water, in fact I can't even fix my arm, which I just now broke, trying to pat myself on the back. :lol:
I do however, like to hear,that I have helped some. :oops:
In the first place, why would anybody listen, to a decrepid, old man, that looks like this?????

Dan.. now that you are up and running.. why not tell us where the crack is in the old carb... Cast iron solders VERY esilly.. and a solder job in a low stress part like that should be a more or less permanent fix, depending on if the crack is in a solderable area.

Forgot to mention.. you might be able to canibalize the old 241 and the new cracked carb, depending on how good the 'copy' was made..

The worst crack is in the bottom by the plug See the white line of talcum powder just below the plug. Since the plug can expand the crack, I think this may not be a low stress area. I did fill it with JB weld, but it still leaks.

I'd solder it, then put in a drain petcock with thread putty.. since the cock won't taken out like a plug.. it should be fine..

The inlet ear on my 8n's old 241 is cracked where the elbow inlet filter is.. Since I don't remove that elbow once I sealed.. it' dont leak.. and the crack onmine is WAY bigger than yours... In my case.. I used JB weld VS thread putty since it was going to be a more or less permanent assembly, vs a plug.. etc.

If you had a hobby machine shop you could always OS the hole, tap it for threads again, make a custom ext/int threaded insert.. set it with fuel safe thread-tite goop of choice., then re-use the oem plug.. however I like the idea of the drain cock even better... bet it is a 2$ item at TSC.

As another option you could solder in a 1/8 pipe thread to thread fitting, and then cap with a pipe cap.. etc.. less elegant.. but would/should work..

Both of your ideas are good ones. Gary put a drain petcock in the new one he built for me & I think that is an "elegant" solution.
