Hey folks. I was just wondering if there was any western fans out there. My daughter had me watch that new western 3:10 To Yuma. Nothing compared to the original in my opinion. Just wondering what your thoughts on it were. I can't get enough of the older ones. But nearly all of the newer westerns seem to be so generic and have no taste. Don't get me wrong, 3:10 was a good movie. Just an absolute downer in comparison.
 
You must be in my boat, I love ALL the old westerns and record them on my "Dish" recorder.I don"t like these new westerns at all. Jim in N M

Most the time whenever I am watching a movie for the 1st time and it is <YAWNing > .I look to the info and the garbage was made in the last 20 years.. Honestly I prefer moveis made All the way back to the Silent Era until Ferris Buehlors Day OFF Era.. Common Sense without need to over impress and capture all audiences Cynical Jim
 
How about ole John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. "Fill yer hands ya son of a b****!"
And in The Shootist. "I won't be wronged I won't be insulted and I won't be layed a hand on."
And perhaps in The Searchers. "Few men could hide from them; none had the courage to face them."
That's the kind of stuff that will never be made again and that future generations had better get a look at for reference on the way to be.
 
Are you telling me that I should watch Broke Back Mountain? I break a lot of things, but never another guys back, and definetly not by being his lover. Thanks anyway. You keep that $hit to yourself. I'll stick with my faster horses, older whiskey, and younger WOMEN. Although the wife ain't too young any more. But she's still younger then me so she suits me very well.
 
How about The Over The Hill Gang. Once Upon A Texas Train is Willie Nelson's remake of the former. Pretty good too. But nothing beats the Duke. Favorite of the duke is McLintock, but all are good.

and of course "How the West was Won"

But one of my favorites was "Is a Mad Mad Mad world" staring just about everyone.

PS just heard on TV that one of the stars of Broke Back mountain (Heath Ledger)found dead in his apartment in NY.
 
I know the Duke died in the Cowboys. My all time favorite western has to be Tombstone. Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. "Must be a peach of a hand" "Why Kate your not wearing a bustle" and "Ike poker must not be your game. I know lets have a spelling contest." Now that is good stuff. 7812
 
Best modern western := Clint Eastwood in the "Unforgiven". Some good sight gags in the movie, too.
 
Two newer westerns I've seen and liked are "Open
Range" with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall and "Broken Trail" with Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church, the guy who played the mechanic on "Wings". I thought Church's performance was extremely good. "Open Range" has what I think is one of the best gunfight scenes in recent history in a western.

That being said, I still love the old stuff from John Wayne. I would have to rate El Dorado (with Robert Mitchum) as my favorite, but I'll watch about any of his westerns.
 
I really liked it until the last 10 minutes. The ending was disappointing. I plan to watch the original just as soon as I can get my paws on it.
 
I'm glad to see you guys know what good movies are. I agree with everything said on this post. Long live the Duke!
 
Ditto on "Tombstone." Kilmer and Curt Russle much better than Kostner, although Dennis Quaid was good as Doc. "Tombstone" had lots of great actors. And Dana Delaney trips my trigger like Ellen Barkin. Gotta love those redheads.

Also liked "Quiggly Down Under." My 16-year-old daughter doesn't think there's any such thing as a good western. Kids nowdays. I grew up with Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Fury, etc. Times have sure changed.

I found a paperback in a used bookstore of short western stories that had all been made into movies. 3:10 to Yuma was one of the stories. I don't think I will watch the movie, can't really believe it will be as good as I imagined the story from reading it.
High Noon was also one of the stories but it had a different title. Several others but I can't remember all the titles or movies that were made based on the stories.

Over the years, I have collected all of Louis Lamour's books and almost all of JT Edson's. Don't see many westerns here in Germany, the ones you do are either Italo westerns or Americans ones dubbed in German (don't quite cut it), but I read my books now and then. Reminds me... they've been boxed up for about 10 years now, time for another go round.
Someone loaned me a series that was on HBO a while back that really sucked, can't remember the name but it had Stacy Keach in it.

John Wayne died in 8 films for definite, and a further two, depending on how you want to look at it.

"The Shootist"

He was already dead at the start of "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", and most of the film is a flashback to when he was alive. It is just stated that he died, but there is no actual death scene.

In "The Sea Chase" it is left to the audience to decide whether or not he died. The romantic among us like to think that he and Lana Turner were able to escape from the sinking ship at the end of the film, but it is not made clear.

I loved the mini series "Lonesome Dove"

And the sequel/predecesor whatever "Comanche Moon" that just played last week? was good as well.

Robert Duvall plays a really good cowboy. And the guy that played his character in Comanche moon did a really good job at acting just like Duvall, with his hands, and body, etc.
I really enjoyed it...
 
I'm might be a little younger than some of you fellas, 30, but my grandaddy and I watched alot of the Duke. Tombstone is my favorite though.. "JC, It's like playin' cards with my brother's kids" or "You gonna do something, or stand there and bleed?
