What blade do I get?

I just recently purchased a 9N that runs great and will come in handy around my 20 acres here in the Northwest. I'm looking to buy a back blade that I can use to level the driveway, move some gravel and plow snow in the winter. Is a 7' blade the right one for what I'm looking to do?

5 footer works best with the N series tractors, 6 foot is ok but pushing its limits and a 7 foot can be used in some places but is past its power limits for much work. Plus a 7 footer could be so heavy that your front wheels will be off the ground more then on the ground which is not good

Troy.........gitta 7-foot blade. Why? 'cuz you can "angle" the blade and scrape the spoils into a windrow for eazy pick'em-up. Iff'n you can't pull the blade, lift yer hy-trol handle alittle-bitt. Even bulldozers haffta control how much a slice they skim off. Simple, eh?

Now "box-blades" are square to the tractor and 5-footers is just right.........Dell

Troy:

I would recommend a 6' straight blade for general work or a 5' box blade for driveway maintenance.

DO NOT buy a 7', It's to big, I know cause I bought one, It is true that it will work it just won't work well, I find that mine loads up with so much snow that my 8n breaks traction.

With my 5' blade, I can pick the blade up with the lift, and turn the blade around backwards.

I don't think I could do that if the blade were any larger, as it would hit the tires.

I have never had a larger one to compare it to though.

Troy, I live outside of Reardan, I use a 6' blade & it is perfect for my 2N. I can spin it around & it still covers my tracks when at an angle. HTH Rusty

Mine could be 6', I can't recall for sure, I would have to go measure it.

I would want to be able to spin it around though.

I've got a 5' that works fine. Could probably use a 6' OK, too, but definitely not a 7'. Everybody has an opinion, and that is mine, for what it is worth. Weigh all of the facts and you decide. Try one of at all possible before you buy a 7'.

I use a very heavily constructed 6' blade on my 2N. My tractor is well ballasted and runs excellently. I like the 6' blade because it covers the width of my wheel settings but yet will turn clear around backwards without hitting tires. I've used it in snow, dirt, manure, gravel and it works very well with my tractor.

i use a 7 ft for snow plowing with no problem at all. as said you can angle it and still cover your tire tracks. 8n has no problems with it. although i have seen some very heavy duty units that an weak n might have issues lifting.

Troy, I have a 7ft and a 5Ft back blade. The 5 was given to me and the 7 came with the first 9N I bought. The 7 has it all over the 5. My 7 turns all the way around. It depends on how the top link is adjusted. I have my tires all the way out for additional stability and have no problem turning the 7 all the way around. It covers your tracks even when angled. When adjusted properly it will dig nice ditches along each side of my 5 mile drive into camp for better drainage. If your tractor is strong you will have not problem. Good luck. Ron

Thanks for all the help everyone! I think I'll go with 6 foot back blade. My local ag store has one available and I have a coupon! This forum is a great resource!

Box blades are super handy for leveling gravel and soil and can be used to "drag" material. After I bought one and used it and found how handy it was; I would have bought one much sooner. Bill
