What did I miss?

One day, some time in the past, the structure of this forum was altered. I get it. Time marches on and change is inevitable. What I'd really like to know is if there is a way an individual can set the way or the order in which posts appear. The old forum added them as they come in. This one seems to move them around as they're responded or ADDED TO. I find this difficult to enjoy. Is there a way I can change this from home? Thanks,,, gm

The change was made at the end of 2023. There were a few tweaks that could be made after the change, but I am not sure they are active any longer.

The change to the new software, ending the old Modern and Classic view format was at the end of 2023, not last year.

You don't know the history.

Classic View that Gary would be familiar with ended with the 2023 software change. A threaded view option (not the true Classic view) was a tweak put in the software, after the software change over, to appease the members that preferred the old Classic format. The threaded view option went away last year; the actual Classic view went away in 2023. If I remember right when Chris Pratt tweaked things in 2024 to add the threaded view, he said at that time he was not sure it could be maintained in the new software long term.

Since the function is gone you can try selecting “watch“ on a thread you are interested in. It will give you an alert if anyone adds a comment and a shortcut to the thread. You can choose to not get an email and it will just show in the alerts column. You probably have to be signed in, I don’t know.

If you make a comment it automatically does that.

i wish it did not do that, i used to comment so much that some days I would wake up with 60 plus notifications.

I was wrong. You can change the default in your account preferences to comment or watch and not get the email.
Remember to save any changes.

Hello Gary welcome back, there was indeed a “Threaded View” I liked it and used it because it allowed you to see longer threads in one continuous page instead of breaking up into pages of 20 replies as it does now. However, I did not use that God forsaken “last reply first..Classic View” mimic option they came up with, which is I suppose what you are looking for. I probably shouldn’t even tell you this because I think the way it is now is quite adequate and one should just learn to accept this is the way “the same material” is now presented. But being a semi-kind soul here it is.
On the right side of the page find “filters”
Click on it and in the bottom left of the box that opens you will see “sort by”
Open this and it will be on “last message”
Change it to “first message” and click on “filter”
The filter will now arrange the threads by the date of the first message in the thread rather than the last message in the thread.
Problem is you have to do this every time you enter a specific forum. Also some forum features reset the filter such as using the “short cut” forum titles (such as Tractor and Farm Talk in this forum) at the top and bottom of the thread to return to the forum index.
I don’t get all the hupala around the fact that when a thread has new content it moves it up in the forum. Makes nothing but common sense to me. Say you’re the original poster, wouldn’t you want to get the feed back from every member about the new information you added instead of just the few that happen upon your thread later and view it.
As far as the internal “Alerts” I love them, I have them all checked as the were in default. The forum “internal alerts” are accessed by Bell icon at the top of the page. Clicking that when a number is shown by it shows you what has happened in a thread you are “watching” which automatically triggers when you start a thread or add a reply. As far as emails notifications, yes I turn those off.

You might consider this: To kind of "pick up where I left off", when I open YT I click on "find threads" at the top, Then "threads that you have posted to" opens up a little ways down. I click on that and I now have a page of everything that I have looked at recently.
