What is a Fuel Rail?

(quoted from post at 04:11:29 09/23/08) What is a fuel rail? What does it do? Haven't heard the term before. Thanks.

A fuel rail is a passage that carries the fuel to the fuel injectors. It could be a separate line or a passage cast into the cylinder head, depending on the engine design.

cummins N series engine, caterpillar and detroit diesels use the rail.any engine that uses seperate lines from the injection pump to the injectors is not a fuel rail.also the chevy ford and i believe dodge diesels are now fuel rail design

I should have clarified my explanation more. A system that has individual lines from the injection pump is not a rail. What I should have said was that a rail is a "common" fuel passage that feeds all the injectors. The injectors are actuated by either electrical or mechanical means to inject the fuel at the proper time. The fuel going through the rail is a low pressure supply on diesel engines, and a higher pressure supply on gas engines. An example of a "common rail" system on a gas engine that you can see would be the lines that go to the fuel injectors on you car or truck engine. An in-line engine has a single common fuel line that feeds all the injectors with a steady fuel supply pressure that gets injected into the engine when the injectors are opened electrically. A vee type engine would have a "rail" on each bank. Diesel engines generally have a passage in the cylinder head that feeds low pressure fuel to all injectors, which are activated mechanically by the camshaft to inject high pressure fuel at the proper time. Sorry about the confusion in my earlier post.
