What is it for?

So I just brought home a MH 44-6. Attached to the narrow front is this rod. What was it used for?

I've had one before. They run smooth but don't have the power the larger four cylinder models do.
I like the smoothness and sound of the flathead six, as well as the hood vs a regular 44. Not as much of a arch. The large arch hood with a flathead would probably have left way to much open space and not looked that good. Less horsepower but not that noticeable.

Farmers here used a shield around front wheels when stripping cotton. It keeps wheels from knotting cotton off. Don’t remember a rod to bolt it on. Maybe a home made one.
