I think they are fence posts. You screw them into the ground and your fence wire clips into the rings. There are three rings and a top loop so you would have a four wire fence. They would be handy to divide a pasture or fence off a small area for grazing.

They are fence posts... Screw into the ground -- string barbed wire --four strings for a temporary fence..

They are from WWII.
Screw them into the ground to help form a barrier/perimeter for ground troops.
Lots of them were sold off as surplus after the war.
I had 4 of them on a property I own.
Pulled them out and got rid of them as I was afraid to catch one in the bush hog.

You are correct and the military fence built was called a picket fence but for the life of me I cannot remember what that post was called. Combat engineer units had the things by the dump truck load.
