Valve spring compressor and one of the better ones in that the latch on the handles has large good notches mash it down and latch it then put the locks in. I have one just like it and it has seen a lot of use in my 78 years .

Or, to be MORE specific, "Valvespring compressor for flathead/sidevalve engines".

(Wouldn't work very well for OHV engines, LOL!)

In my pea-brained world, I could not see that as a compressor. More like a spreader, up until someone mentioned flat head engines.

Thank goodness I didn't jump on a response right away. I have eaten enough crow for a while.

I should said ''Side valve'' spring compressor as well!

This type works against the block or lifter and the retainer in a fashion opposite of a compressor that just slips between the coils of the spring and draws them together.
