What years where the A's made that have round axle housing, two stick transmission, and square battery box under seat? What is the difference between round and square housings and which transmission is the better of the two? Thanks for any response.

As two stick trans made in 1947 48 49 singel stick 1950 and on square housing also started 1950 but i have a 1950 with round housing bought from son of first owner he said it come that way in the fall of 49 seral # comffrims as 1950 model the single stick trans has a slower 1st gear the pullers like this trans other wise both good trans Kent

584000-647999 had two stick transmissions. Starting at 648000 they had the single stick. The change was made in the early part of the 1950 model year. The first 7653 1950 models were Hi/Lo transmissions. 650764 was the first square axle on the A which was also almost half way through the 1950 model year. 10,515 1950 models had round axles.

I"m reading my parts manual and it may not be too clear, but Casting Number A3270, Part Number AA4040R is the last axle housing listed. It says it fits from 584000 and later. Does this mean that this is when they started using it, or that it will fit these tractors, in case you need to replace one?

Pappy, I don't have a parts book on the A but TWO-CYLINDER had a very nice artical in there July-Aug, 1998 edition and it says altho the axle changed from round to square the A3270R casting number continued on. Also the AN and AW model never changed to square axles but went to the end of the production run with the round axle. The casting number for the AN and AW was A3271R. I would not want to tell you if they could be interchanged becouse I don't know for sure. I do recall reading somewhere the reason for the change was made becouse the round axles, in some cases, were getting cracks in them. The square housing was stronger.
