What's a bushel

Hello every one ,After spending all of my life in, on and around farms ,i stil don't know what's abushel and how do you measure it.will really apreciated .Thankyou gaston

it is a volume measurement
typically converted to weight for buying and selling of grain
shelled corn 56lbs
ear corn 72lbs
soybeans 60lbs
wheat 60lbs
oats 32lbs
when grain is sold typically one of the tests run on it is test weight per bushel. have seen corn go from 48-60 lbs. so good corn at 60 lbs test weight brings a premium when bought by weight and wet low quality corn brings a discount as it takes less/more actual bushels to make a bushel by weight

A bushel is, I believe, 1.4 cubic feet. Test weight is the # of pounds of any particular grain you can get in this area. The old standby is the "Winchester weight", wich is a hand held scale with a one quart metal pail. The grain is dropped into the bucket throught a specially constructed funnel until it runs over, and then leveled with three strokes of a round edged pieced of wood. Then the weight is determined. That's why Oats, only 32 # per bushel, vs. wheat or soybeans at 60# per bushel is a lot less dry matter for the price. It also explains why you can get 7000 bushels in a 6000 bushel bin. If you corn measures 60# per bushel, and officially only needs 56# to make a bushel, you get more bushels in a smaller space.

I have also been searching for such information, myself. I know what any given bushel of any common commodity is by weight, and that is typically how our current grain market goes, too. At harvest, trucks are weighed loaded and empty for that verry reason, too.

However, there is also the exacting measurement by volume. It is by sheer volume, that bins, hoppers, grain carts and even combines must be measured, to determine their bushel capacity.

Now I know in terms of exactness, it is 2150.42 cu. in.

I went on that wikipedia thing and looked it over just before I left the web I was reading on the Case one. I Did not know that thay have been the number 1 selling combine for over 30 years????!!!!

If you're talking about Case, they were most definitely NOT the number one selling combine for 30 years, anytime.

The only true No.1 combines during various periods of history were:
Allis-Chalmers All Crops [the very small pull-types that outsold the big combines by at least 5 to one]
Massey-Harris/Massey-Ferguson [they had the self-propelled market and majority of the wheat belt market]
John Deere [No.1 in sales of corn combines, later a leader in the corn belt and finally reached top of combine market in 1975]

Years ago everyone around 'here' had silver combines.

Then everyone had Green combines. Even if every other piece of machinery was Red - and Red tractors were _very_ popular around here - the combine was Green.

The last 10 years or so, if it is a new combine, it is 90% going to be Red. Silver doesn't have enough dealers/parts, and Green is not popular any more.

Planters too, the 7000 series meant _everyone_ had a Green planter. Now with a new planter, they are 90% Red. The new Green ones do not seem to impress, Red finally got their air setup working right.

I think he means that if you go on to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia web sight and typed in combine harvester in the search box that you will find Deere, Case ih, Cat and claas. And all the way to the bottom you will in deed see that is says that ih is the af/afx leader for 30 years.

arent the cih and silver seeders all part of the agco comglomeration? we go to our local cih dealerships for agco,case,hesston,ih,cih,allis.etc. parts.

No Guys CNH is it"s own company and in no way related to AGCO, some dealers may have differnt lines availible to them, and if at some point in time they also sold said other line they may still carry parts for that line of equipment.
