Whats a buzz saw?

What comes to mind when I think of a buzzsaw, is watch the fingers. What also comes to mind is that 4' diameter blade on that portable sawmill that a guy stumbled into down the road a few years back when cutting in some new 18" supports for the barn. They didn't even take him to the local hospital by ambulance, they just kind of picked him up in a helicopter and flew him down to Indy from the farm. He lived, but he was a mess and so was the saw. That's what comes to mind when I think of buzzsaw. I'll just stick to my worm gear circulars, chop saws, sawzalls, and little stuff like that.

A traditional definition is:
A flat belt driven radial saw that resembles a huge tablesaw. The blade is usually over 18" diameter usually 24+. The arbor runs across the top of the frame, and the saw is monted on that.
The units are designed with a sliding or tilting table that "kinda" holds the limb or log in position and supports it as the table is pushed manually past the blade. They usuakky run near twice drive speed using a smaller ~6-7" pulley on the driven end, and a standard 9 or 10" pulley on the drive (tractor) end. They can be stand alone, with legs and ground anckors, or monted to the tractor to allow freedom of movement.
Dangerous
hard on the labor end of things
very noisy
and considered way better than an axe, or buck saw.

One mistake there could be real serious. I thought about getting one, several older guys told me to forget about it. One guy told me that after his dad passed, the only thing him and his brothers agreed on was to dump the buzz rig in hole and bury it with some other junk. None of them wanted it, even for free.

I still have a buzz saw that was made by a neighbor for a Case tractor just like the one in your picture. He even arc welded patent pending on the frame. It was made with square tubing that mounted in the square holes right behind the front wheels. The belt went directly to the pulley. It was nice because we could drive it around to the pile. When I was a kid, dad and I, or my brothers sawed up a lot of fire wood with that thing.

I use one of these to saw fire wood,it's a one man operation.Don't they have safety inspectors at these shows.?

To me a buzz saw is a home-made saw of any type. Usually stationary and used to cut firewood with motor and belt drive underneath.

A chain saw is far more dangerous.A buzz saw never moves around. You just have to be smart enough to stay away from the blade.I saw alone ,just let the cut pieces drop and move along the pile.I know plenty of people who have been cut by a chain saw.I call them a cord wood saw,a sharp saw cuts quiet. The new shaft drive saws are well guarded.Ive worked around sawmills. The sawyer and the off bearer have no reason to be near the running saw blade. If some one is taking away from a cordwood saw they cant be dreamers or wave their hands around. All tools can get you.

They probably wanted to avoid the work of sawing fire wood.5.00 fuel oil will get a lot of old saws running again.Fire wood is selling for 200.00 a cord here.

I know they're nice for sawing cordwood, but they're dangerous and you had better not be careless when using one of these saws. Personally I like a chain saw better. We had one of those buzz saws that was mounted on a Farmall H
and we drove it into the woods. We only cut up trees that were dead or down. Used a crosscut saw back then to cut pieces to a length we could handle. Then used the H and buzz saw. Hal

An uncle of mine and I are both missing our left index finger to the second joint.

I got mine caught in the gears of a pump jack when I was 16 months old. My uncle lost his in a buzz saw sawing firewood.

Here's a safer version........ With all the gaurds and safety devices, I managed to about knock my head off when a log kicked back. But, when the blade spins the right direction (I had the polarity reversed), it cuts through wood like butter.

Face cord cant be used in Maine to sell wood.Cord is 4x4 by 8 = 128 cu feet .Four foot wood will shrink to 100 cu feet if sawed to 12 inch sticks.Face cord can have only 25 cu feet of actual wood.A 10 cord load of tree length can shrink to 8 cord if cut to 4 foot wood.Towns used to have an officer who was called a measurer of bark and wood in past years.Looks like we need them now to keep wood sellers honest.

Does that Case in the background have the hitch on the front so it can be pulled around be one of the Deers?
