What's the Deal

There have been several posts on the John Deere forum lately about the John Deere 330 purchased at a steal. I'm not pursuing that but there was a couple posts on the Massey Forum about a MF 130. Now both tractors are supposly rare but one brings a high price and most say stay away from the MF 130 because parts are scarce. I would think parts are scarce on any rare tractor. My question is what makes one tractor collectable and the other one not? No tractor wars please.

For me, its memories from the past like the 44-6 that is identical to the one dad bought in 1947. I am not interested in high crops for instance as there were none used in my area of Indiana.

Guess that 130 Massey is new to me.Never saw one. Don't know why it wouldn't be valuable if it's scarse. The Oliver Super 44 and 440 are rare and super valuable. Maybe there are a lot of guys like me and don't know about the 130. You might have started something.

Just cannot imagine anyone wanting a tractor just setting around doing nothing. What a silly notion, these collectors.

WHOOPS! What the heck am I saying? Got 6 of the old poopers sitting out there on "Windy Hill" doing just that as we speak.

The shame of it all. Guess I'm a collector. :>(

I ran an MF 130 for a day on a friends place and it was a little sweetie. Same dimensions as an 8N but Perkins power, Live PTO and hydraulics, etc. You want a rare one, look for its' predecessor, an MF 25. Have brochures for both.

The difference? Two words. BRAND NAME.

The 130 was a mistake on Massey Fergusons part. As good as the bigger Perkins diesels were, the 130 had a grenade for power. Brakes were useless. The tractor never sold in numbers. A few more bucks got you one of the best ever in the 135. Parts were almost impossible to get when the tractor was current. Forget all about finding parts nowdays. The 130 shares virtually nothing with the bigger Massey's.

And it didn't have a John Deere emblem on the nose.

The 330? Probably not all that much better as far as a usable tractor when all is said and done, but it DID have that John Deere emblem.

There's "rare" as in not many of them. Then there's "rare" as in worth a lot of money. 2 totally different concepts.

I had a 130 for awhile, and it seemed like it took forever to get rid of that lemon. Rear cylinder smoked and missed until warmed up, hydraulics and 3 point never did work right, made in France, etc., etc. I can't imagine it ever being collectable. There are so many Deere collectors, and I suppose they sieze on anything rare, what with the "sea of green" A's and B's out there.

The number made against the number who want one.

A winchester rifle will sell for big buck even though millions were made where another brand will bring next to nothing even though only a few were made.
Same thing with tractors JD has a large amount of buyers so the price is going to go up.
Case on the other hand has few buyers and sell for half or less for the same size tractor.
