What's wrong with John Deere?

I've been wondering why John Deere took their name off their smaller implements and called them Pioneer. I asked my local JD dealer and he claimed he had no idea. My guess is that they wanted to make a cheaper product, so they took their name off to avoid adverse opinions of the John Deere name when the cheaper implements fail in comparison to the older JD ones. Most of the name brand tire companies do this when they make a cheap tire.

I think you pretty much have it... although some of the equipment with the Pioneer name is good stuff, not apt give problems/fail. I'm pretty sure anything with the Pioneer name is NOT built by John Deere.

Because the most shoppers will drive to the next town to save a nickel on cheaper equipment.

You mean Frontier??? None of the stuff is cheap junk, made by the likes of Landpride, Kuhn, and now Pequea, among others. It has been explained to me like this: Deere says they cannot build any of this equipment profitably in their own factories anymore because demand is too low. It is still high enough though to offer someone else's product (company with lower overhead=lower cost) to still cover the market. Deere has sold other manufacturer's equipment under their name before (the 1980s grain carts, for example, were United Farm Tools products), but chose to keep a separate name this time so that part numbers of other manufacturers did not have to be integrated into Mother Deere's system again. I also wouldn't be surprised if there are also some tax breaks involved for outsourcing the stuff.

Actually those grain carts were made by Wetmore at Tonkawa Oklahoma then bought out by United Farm Tools and then AGCO. Lots of shredders, planters and other equipment has been made by others for JD over the years. Some they bought out way back putting their name on it later and some they didn't. Look at older Kinze and JD planters. Every ag equipment company has some history of other equipment built for them or smaller companies they later bought out. Oh but you notice JD isn't ashamed to put their name on those new China made tractors? Probably a big mistake later on when they are nothing but scrap iron.

Pioneer is an Amish equipment maker here in Ohio, some very good equipment.
