Wheel Bolt - Help Needed

We needed to set the wheels on my 1971 Case 570 in to get it on a trailer a couple of days ago. In the process we broke a couple of the bolts that connect the "loop" rims to the pressed steel wheels. The parts manual calls for a "Bolt - rim (5/8 x 2-11/16" special)". My local dealer indicated that Case no longer stocks these bolts, but instead refers to a standard grade 8 bolt.

Th original bolt have a flat head similar to a carriage bolt that is "squared off" on two sides of the head. Unlike a carriage bolt, it doesn't have the square shoulders under the head. It only has a "dog" or hump under the head that keeps it from turning.

The threads are fine.

Anyone know where I might find these bolts? - Joe

Hi Joe,
Do you have a fastenal store close by? Maybe even a Napa Automotive store? Just thought I would throw out some suggestions. Fastenal carries or can order a phenomenal amount of hardware. It might be worth a shot. Best of luck to you.

Another possibility is local wrecking yard. Case was Not the only manufacturer that used that style of wheel bolt.

Fastenal has a website and I've ordered from their website before. Even with shipping, I can get square headed bolts there cheaper than anyplace local. The nearest Fastenal retail location is about 35 miles away.

I had the same problem with the power adjust wheels on a 300 I was restoring a few years ago.
At that time Case had some bolts but the cost was $14. each, I bought 5/8" carriage bolts and ground 3 of the corners off and they then fit in the loops and the one corner keeps the bolts from turning. Roger

Notice the rounded corners that is where the other flat would be. Just use the grade 8 bolts they will fit OK and not turn on you. Don't use anything less than grade 8 bolts.

A grade 8, dome head plow bolt would work with some grinder shaping as Roger mentioned.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I found a current Massey part number (828217M1) that looks like a viable replacement. The Massey bolts are 2-7/8" instead of the 2-11/16" called out in my parts manual. Assuming the threads go far enough up the bolt shank they should work. They were available from a number of online vendors including the Yesterday's Tractors store, which had a set of six bolts with nuts for $15.00. Not cheap, but not as bad as I expected.
