wheel horse 312 starter

I have a wheel horse 312 and when the starter wont spin .I have installed a new battery .
The lights dim when I turn the key but the starter wont spin .Is the starter bad ?? How can i test it.. The engine is not locked up..
Where can I find a used starter ??

I think you have a bad starter. Your local auto
machine shop that rebuilds starters, generators and alternators can probably test your starter. I would put this posting on the Garden tractor forum. Some of those that post on there have some parts.

Have you tested the solenoid? With the ignition off, short the two large terminals on the solenoid with a medium screwdriver (watch your fingers!)& see if the starter turns the engine over. If it does, but won't with the ignition switch it's probably the solenoid. You have to check the safety switches too, there's one on the clutch (RHS under the main drive belt guard) the PTO switch (RHS just behind the PTO lever) & the seat switch (under the seat). Weight on seat, clutch in & PTO off in order to start
