Wheel Weight Interchangability

I see Sears's 55 pound rear wheel weights say they will fit on "most 12 inch rear wheels" Without looking at them, I wonder if they use carraige bolts like my Bolens QT-17 and if those dimensions are more or less standardized. In a nutshell are most 12 inch wheel weights standard fitting? Anyone out there know? Thanks everyone.

Most - if not all 12" wheel weights are interchangable.

I have pair of them sitting right outside. They will fit almost any brand of 12-inch wheel since the carriage bolts come from inside the wheel to the outside of the weight.

They wouldn't be very good for stacking weights at all since they are plastic, they are convex on the outside, and they project into the rim on the inside.

The Sears weights do not have carriage bolt slots for attaching more weights like some brands.

If you are going to run turf tires with chains and put fluid in your tires, one set of weights ought to be enough. In order to stack weights, you'd most likely need sets by the same manufacturer.

The prices on cast iron weights has gone crazy the past year or two. I don't know where I'd look to buy some. You might check with a dealer, since the price of new weights isn't much higher than the price for used ones. Some times a dealer has a few used sets lying around.

These Sears weights were owned by a lady who traded her old Sears LGT in on a newer one. She thought the sleeve hitch, weights, and rear blade would fit the new one. I got the weights and rear blade cheap.

I have been tempted to try putting some conduit for the bolts in a 5 gallon plastic bucket and filling the bucket up a few inches with concrete.

I make my own from round patio blocks they are strong enough to drill with mason bit the 12" are just the right size for garden tractor.Drill holes cement two together and you get 28# per side. these are cheep. less than ten buck per set with bolts. Make them in about 30 min. they look good to. The 12" are 11 1/4 at top side perfect fit. DS

They had a computer controlled torch setup where I worked and it made nice wheel weights for garden tractors from armor plate. It couldn't burn the holes for the mounting bolts, but it would burn a nice slot for the bolt. We welded flat washers over the slots so the weights wouldn't fall off. Used 1/2 inch carriage bolts. Had a handle welded on so you could lift them easily. They weigh at least 50 pounds. I sprayed them with acid primer and never put a finish coat on them and they still look good for being about 36 years old. Hal
