When Is A Full Pull NOT A Full Pull?

Went to the local county fair tractor pull on Saturday night, and I saw something that made me question something.

The final class was a "King of the Hill" class..."run what ya brung, and hope ya brung enough," they said. At the end of the round, they initially called 3 pullers back for a pull-off...but then only let 2 of them pull. The reason given was, while all 3 had pulled the full length of the course, the one that was NOT allowed in the pull-off stopped AT the dirtpile at the end of the course, while the other two didn't stop until their front tires were ON TOP OF the dirtpile.

So I guess I learned a lesson about tractor pulling: when you get to the end of the run, KEEP GOING until you hit the wall; otherwise, your potential first-place tractor may end up 3rd or worse. I don't personally know any of the participants in that class, and I really don't have an ax to grind for or against any of the tractor makes or the participants...in fact, a Case/IH won the class, so as a red tractor fan, I guess I oughta be happy.

But I still think the guy with that white Case tractor got the shaft. Am I wrong?

I have seen and experienced that all too often. Most times its a guy stops at the end of the track so as not to look like a show boat and them the next guy may stop a foot or two later and as time runs out they decide not to have a pull off and so the first guy is not in second place and that may or may not be the true result.

I got into a pulloff at a local pull and in the pulloff I ended up second so i thought. The anouncer was giving out the results and trophies. Well i didnt even get third. So went to investigate. He said when you make a fullpull the second distance is what counts. Well i didn"t pull as far cause they adjusted sled for the pulloff. Well the promoter had to step in to take care of the problem. What really i didn"t understand is the anouncer is a puller and been round long enough to know how it works.

Thats why I like floating finishes. Set the sled to try to stop them by 300 feet and if a few real hot ones go 300+ where they stop is how they finish.

The rule we have established is:

1. A full pull cone is set.

2. The sled then is pull thru to establish a distance to the cone. IE: 300 ft

3. Any tractor pulling the front of sled pan to the cone or reaches the preset distance of 300 ft, is awarded a full pull or a pull off, if more than one qualifies. Say 3 tractors full pull then those 3 pull off and thats your 1st,2nd,and 3rd place winners.. reguardless of their pull off distance..

I have pulled where due to the many entry's and the time it takes to run all the classes they do not have a full pull line. They only use distance and pull off the ties. If the first tractor pulls it out the end they reset the sled.
