Hello again, on my 50' 8n. How do i know when to let it go??? As far as the motor goes???

DI........do the infamous compression test. Ford specs: 90psi minimum. New engine will test about 125psi. There are many causes of low compression; including stuck compression rings, burned exhaust valves, leaky headgasket, and surprizingly enuff, worn out engine. ........Dell

I got the head off so i cant do the test but two of my valve are sticking up and not sealed. Also there is alot rust/dirt inside and where the S/n number is there is a crack on the motor. HELP!!!! I'll take pic tonight when i get off work.

A lot depends on the tractor. If it's a family tractor most find that any amount of money is justified in repairng or restoring it. If it's just something you picked up and you got into way more than you bargined for that decision has to be up to you. How bad do you want the tractor and how deep are your pockets kinda thing. Me I'm hard headed. I'd be looking for a good block or rebuildable engine if the old block was to far gone. Or maybe a running tractor and stripping the old one for parts before sending the rest to scrap.

is the crack big---some can be welded. sticky valves just take a little time and effort---shop manual, and a few affordable parts---have seen farmers run tractors with cracked blocks and add water to radiator every third pass. depends on what you want it for, and how much you are willing to spend. if you buy another, how many unknown problems will it have?

When you decide you want a tractor that just runs and not a project that never ends. Consult your accountant - both are expensive.

Ns are SO common and SO cheap right now that it does kind of baffle me why some guys will take a
$1000 N and dump $2500 into it. Unless of course it was a family tractor etc, etc.
Don't get caught up in the gotta fix it mentality. Look around for another N. Take the best parts of the two tractors and make one good one. Then sell off the rest of the parts that you don't need. You will be money ahead in the long run and you wont own a $3500 N that you could only sell for $2000 when you are done.

DI.........you write......."S/n number is there is a crack on the motor".......guess what??? the previous owner didn't drain the block or was too cheap to put anti-freeze in and the block cracked. Many block cracks have been successfully sealed with "J&B Weld". (that's a very good epoxy) Welding a block crack takes special rods and an OVEN to slowly (12-hr cool down) cool the block so it don't crack. But the J&B treatment is eazy for even the most inexperienced shadetree mechanic. ........Dell

Ya, your right, But i DO need it right now!!!!Deer season is here and need to make some deer food plots. Ya and if i have to get the block messed with and coast 500 dollars to seal, ect and the parts overhaul kits are 480. You can buy a fully overhaul 8n for 1500. Just need someone to guide me if the block/motor is crap. When i post some pics on here

With a better understanding now a few quick calls around the area should tell you if it's feasable to rebuild. You can get the price on parts online but will have to check for machine shop prices. Good machine shops are not expensive....they are pricless! If you decide to rebuild and repair the crack and you can do the tear down and rebuild with only paying for machine shop services you can expect to pay between 1000 and 1200 total. With the crack maybe a bit more. If you can buy a good running N in your area for 1500 I'd say it's a no brainer. Buy it and use this one as a parts tractor. My area they are a bit higher so I would tell you if the crack can be repaired to rebuild.

Just my thoughts on it. Others may disagree.....but you are asking opinions.

LOL thats true! But the folks down in the deep south should at least beable to get clover started now I would think.....here in MN would be a good time to [u:20ff083f83]start thinking [/u:20ff083f83]about winter wheat maybe.
