He posted a video on youtube last weekend, so he's still around.

I'd imagine busy with school and being a typical 18/19-year-old is taking up a lot of his time, not to mention making the videos.

Don't kid yourself,JMOR,he's doing quite well. Companies are sending him equipment to use and evaluate on a regular basis. A lot of which I can't afford to buy. He has the best equipped shop I have ever seen for a 19 year old.

He can't weld and type at the same time. Although he can video and weld pretty good.His MIG vid was good . I never even thought or knew about the polarity change on the MIG for flux vs gas .

Ditto to that! Pretty soon he'll be sending stuff to Puddles instead of the other way around. LoL Sure wish Puddles was still on here. He has more knowledge in his pinky finger than I'll ever have.

Hey Lanse,

I've never taken the time to post here, but I have watched both arguments about puddles, and about the manifold. It seems that 'john whateverhisname is', as you say, was able to backup everything that he had to say. It was only after both puddles and yourself realised you had no backing to what you were saying that you resorted to insults and foul language. And as much as I enjoy learning from all of you, it's hard to respect someone who refuses to accept that they might be wrong.
The goal here should be to help other learn, and to progress ourselves. You both know a lot about welding, but Jon has a lot to offer about welding as a profession. It's too bad that you can't accept things that Jon knows, and vice versa. Accepting new ideas and learning from your mistakes is a tough part of life, but by now you should at least know when it's time to be quiet and save face. I wish you all the best of luck in the future regardless.

Puddles went through an apprenticeship and worked as a professional licensed welder on some extremely large projects and also as project superintendent on billion dollar projects. He's posted countless pictures and reference material to back up all of his claims. Jon as far as I can tell has mostly built trailers but never went through an apprenticeship. Jon had said Puddles doesn't know what he's talking about and even claimed blueprints are usually wrong. That was the start of it. Someone posted about a homemade trailer they made and Puddles had concerns about it being strong enough. Jon thought it was OK. Looking at pictures of Puddles workmanship compared to Jon's there's no comparison. Puddles is a master craftsman who never cuts corners. Jon has posted pictures of mistakes he's made. Who's advice would you take?

If I were to build a bridge, or make ornate ornaments with a plasma cutter, I'd go talk to Puddles.

If pictures floated my boat, again, it would be Puddles. I have my own pictures. Billion dollar job? No, I haven't and wouldn't want to be on one of those. They neither impress nor interest me. Is A514 grade Q an allowable material for pressure applications? Who cares if all we're doing is welding angle iron, or building trailers to use day in and day out?

I've always liked George md and welding mans posts too. Answers, and that's it. No need for the fluff.

So posting a chart showing allowable beam loads to back up your concerns is a bad thing? Puddles has built trailers, log splitters, buckets, overhead cranes and all kinds of other things things people on this forum could use. His workmanship is second to none. He's taken the time to weld coupons and try different rods to show how they compare. I'm sorry but building trailers is not the be all end all to welding. When asked Jon has made excuses for his less than stellar workmanship. What's really sad is that Puddles was banned from posting and a lot of people are missing out on his experience and expertise that he was always willing to share. It is YT's loss that they have banned Puddles.

What would be the end all be all to welding? I've got a dollar saying somebody won't agree with your answer, or any given answer for that matter.

My answer would be whatever I'm welding in the way that I'm doing it. I would have little trouble finding fault with any dissent.

I would like a forum where projects were posted, and comments weren't allowed. Ideas ( good or bad) without the drama. Human nature wouldn't allow such a thing.

Having someone with considerable experience point out a design flaw or potential problem is a bad thing? You won't learn much or get better at something if you don't ask questions and put in a lot of practice. Having a difference of opinion is fine but sometimes an opinion could be wrong and if it was followed could seriously hurt someone or cause a lot of damage. Criticism in a constructive way is a good thing. If you don't want to be critiqued, you take your chances posting on an open forum.

Fair enough. We tend to be on the same page on most of this, but we take different routes. I'm going to go ahead and say you take the long way.

Out with the tractor and chain this morning and it occurred to me that perhaps even more important than what he brings to any welding discussion is his rigging experience.

More people can weld than can rig. I'd bet he's saved/made more money though competent rigging than he has with the welding. The last post of his that I seen he posted a pic of some wire rope he used to splice by hand. I don't recall anyone ever emphasizing the importance of that knowledge. Everyone is hung up on the welding.

He had a Miller Trailblazer 55 400 amp diesel welder he said he made nothing but money with. These were not a cheap machine as they could run a wire feeder and stick. I think he paid over $14,000 for it about 25 years ago. Just look at his shop on his acreage and all the equipment he has. I'd say he made a lot of money at whatever he did.

As far as welding, a lot of people have welded but that doesn't make them a welder. There is a lot more to welding than just picking up the stinger. There's a lot of theory involved. If you wanted to get into all the structural codes and ASME codes, you could spend 10 years and not know half of it. Just like a lot of people have built stuff out of wood couldn't build a house.
