White 2-85 slipping

Hi, hope someone here can help me out. I have a White 2-85, 1981 model, with approx. 2500 hours. It has begun slipping, no matter which position the over/under is in. I don't think the problem is with the dry clutch, I took the cover off and its not getting hot or smoking. I changed the over/under oil and filter (oil looked pretty good), using the 55 wt oil recommended by AGCO.

I've only had the tractor for a year, but I saw it plowing, so it pulled good then. Since it slips in all positions, I'm wondering the oil pump for the over/under is weak, so that it isn't putting enough pressure to the clutches? Is there any way to check this, and what should the pressure be?

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Farmer Fred

USE ONLY DEXRON TRANS OIL IN ALL HYDRAULS,IT WILL NOT SLIP IN UNDER DRIVE IT EITHER WILL WORK OR IT WONT IN UNDER DRIVE , SOUNDS LIKE THE MAIN CLUTCH, MAYBE THE CENTER BROKE OUT OF THE CLUTCH PLATE ,IVE SEEN THAT HAPPEN BEFORE

Ah, you mean type 55 oil, not 55 wt. An oil that meets the type 55 spec is the correct oil for your over/under and was what was recommended by White. So, keep using what you are using.

The likelihood of your over under going out in all three speeds is very low seeing how the sprag used for under drive does not require any pump flow to engage. Like others have said, look at your main clutch for the source of your slip.

Thanks all for your quick replys. Yes I meant the "special 55" oil AGCO sells, for a pretty special price too as I remember. But if Under doesn't use oil pressure, the problem has got to be the main clutch. In a way this is good news, I can handle replacing the main clutch, it doesn't look like that bad a job. The rad is leaking a bit anyway, might as well tackle both jobs at once.

I thought that a slipping clutch would be happen gradually, first under heavy loads, but if something broke in the pressure plate, it explains why it showed up suddenly. Also explains why the clutch pedal feels "light" compared to other tractors - I just thought it was nice to have one that clutched so easy!

And its ok to use Dextron for hydraulics and the rear end also? When I bought the oil, the parts guy did say that he thought most people do that.

Thanks again for your help, its really helped point me in the right direction.

I dont think it is ok to use automatic transmission oil in the rearend or the hydraulics, just the hydrapower. Someone else come back on this.

I agree on not using the Dextron type oil in the rearend. Use the Transdraulic oil when the hydraulic system uses the rearend oil. When the hydraulic system is seperate, I don't see where it would hurt to use an automatic transmission oil in it, although being more expensive.

You will not know if the clutch is slipping until you open it up and look at the pressure plate...

I just came in to take a break from pulling the clutch out of a 1600 this afternoon... Same deal as you... I have nursed it through 2 years doing plowing (not bad), then discing (had to be really careful), then finally relegated it to just pulling the Hardi sprayer to keep it from burning up..
I need it for planting next spring pulling a JD7000 planter, so the clutch has to work properly, so it is more grease under the nails, time...

My biggest worry is the the rear seal is leaking (looks nasty in there) which means if it is bad I have to lift the motor to get the pan down... Once I get that far in I will be tempted to put a bunch of money into overhauling the motor (arrrgggh)

No, don't use dextron in the trans or hydraulics. Likely what the parts guy meant is to use the Agco fluid in the trans and hydraulics. What you bought for your over under is likely Permatran 821XL.

In most modern equipment, the hydraulics, transmission, final drive, and powershift all run off one common reservoir. When you look at the power density and precision of a modern transmissions, it far far far exceeds what your White is being subjected to. It's perfectly acceptable to run one fluid in all three reservoirs. I run Mobil 424 in all my equipment so I only have to keep one fluid on hand.

Interesting side note....we had several test engines that inadvertantly ran for several thousand hours with universal hydraulic oil in them. I was amazed at how good they looked. That gives you an idea how good modern universal transmission oil is.
