Whiteouts

Winter, Yuk! We get it blowing here and vision on the roads is zero. Was out inspecting a while ago with a gent from Iowa and he said he had never seen whiteouts like this. I was surprised at that statement, but then more than 100 cars were into a chain reaction crash on Highway 400 last weekend because they just would not slow down in bad weather.
Two more on Hwy. 10 this morning.

Hey Tom..a fifty vehicle pile up near Woodstock Ontario on the 401 and two fifteen vehicle pile ups..people won't slow down when the roads are bad so what do they expect....

Sounds like all the mentally challenged yuppies around here. They hop in their SUV's and go like mad. They always forget that 4wd doesn't do any good for stopping.

Damndif you do and Damndif you don't. Same happened in summer when a truck blew a turbo and smogged out everyone behind him. What you do when you can't see? Keep going untill you hit someone or stop and someone hit you? Best slowdown, pray and minamize the dammage to all.

I live a mile from the Interstate, so I'm on it all the time. And when the surface gets slick enough for idiots to start sliding off, 3/4 of the vehicles you see stuck in the median are SUV's.

Its a well known fact that wrecker drivers pull out more 4x4 vehicles than they do cars. 4 wheel drive is great for acceleration, that is it. It will not hold you on the road at highway speeds (most try to run 70 when its snowing like mad), and it doesn't stop you better than a 2 wheel drive.
The other thing that most of these nutty people don't think of, the modern day SUV has a higher center of gravity, they flip alot easier than cars and lower profile vehicles.
One wrecker driver told me to tell people run in 2 wheel drive, when you get stuck in the ditch, put it in 4 wheel and hope like he11 you get out.

Having a 4-wheel drive does not mean you won't get stuck. All it means is that when you DO get stuck, you're significantly farther from the road, and it's going to cost significantly more to drag your sorry butt back to the main road.

401 east at Grafton is still closed last I heard too, 6 transports and 2 cars.

One of the problems are people who believe "All Season Tires" are "snow & ice tires". They are not.
Spending one's income on luxuries instead of purchasing premium quality tires is another problem
when the temperature is below 40F the tires required at the Michelin Ice-X or similar.

I had a taste of that, about 10 years ago, on 401 near Lancaster. There were about 15 mack trucks and my little Cummins truck in a pile up. The Cummins is the only reason I am still alive as the stout truck absorbed hitting a mack, and then another hit from behind by another mack truck. And besides, in my old work, I was always going down Interstate 81 in the infamous snow belt between Syracuse, NY and Watertown, and that was always good for a pucker factor. So, I have seen all the white outs I want for a life time.

These pickup and SUV drivers fail to realize that 4 wheel drive does not change the coefficient of friction between rubber and ice, nor does it provide a radar that gives visibility through white outs.

My philosophy exactly. 4 wheel drive is to get you out of the mess that 2-wheel gets you into.

I was horrible over the weekend in SW ontario. Monday wasn"t bad and then it picked up again on tuesday. Was dang cold last noght. That wind went right through my tough duck coveralls. All 4wd does it gets you stuck worse and when 1 wheel locks up they basically all lock up. Drive safe

I had to drive from Watertown NY to Syracuse NY on rt 81 this past sunday at about 12 noon. White out for 15 t0 20 miles of the trip. Four 18 wheelers off the road one on its side, and a whole bunch of cars and small trucks in the ditch. Its off the east end of lake ontario for those who arent familiar.

Ive driven that strech a hundred times , never saw it worse.

I can't think of a worse stretch of highway anywhere than between Syracuse and Watertown for blowing, drifting snow. First, lake effect snow, and then when the lake finally freezes over, blowing snow. Not uncommon to see 110" of snow on the ground.

I have a set of four Michelin X-Ice on my truck and they are probably the best winter tire I've ever used.
