who makes them (chainsaws)???

Hey folks, looking at smaller saws.. Can someone tell me who makes these and if they are worth buying?

Both are Japanese and good saws. Tanaka now owned by Hitachi I think. Both make good commercial grade stuff.

I prefer Echo, but that's just me. I've got a small Echo saw and weedeater. Both have worked flawlessly.

I would also vote for Echo as they are very good quality for the price.
easy starters, quiet running, light weight and plenty of power.

Are there different echos than the ones home depot sells as far as quality??

I have my heart set on a stihl but just can't order one online (cost too much here in stihl land)....
Ran across the tanaka and hitachi on amazon for 220 bucks for a 14" top handle...

Asking myself now if that top handle is really what I want/need... to clean up a little along fences and around the fruit trees & just cut up scrap wood now and then... Wondering if just the MS170 would suit me better... You won't find me climbing in trees....

I don t know about the saws but I was looking at
Home D for Echo trimmers and at a local store, the
model I bought at the local store was not sold at
HD. The price and the looks of the machine were the
same. I like buying from the guy I know, and some
place to get warranty work done.

I would avoid the Lowes/Home Depot Chainsaws.

I bought a Homelite, used it for 4 hours clearing downed trees from a storm. It started giving me problems. Tried to service it, its unserviceable, tried to see where I could have it repaired, the box says have to send it to the manufacturer. The big box stores don't repair or warranty their products. I ended up fixing it myself violating the warranty and sold it to a friend. I went out and bought a Stihl from a dealer and had good luck since.

I have an Echo, bought from a local dealer. Probably 20 years old, put 1 sparkplug in it, after sitting it always starts the 2nd or 3rd pull. In use, it starts on the first pull. Has gone through many chains, would buy another 1 if I need to.

hitachi is made by tanaka.tanaka is one of the largest makers of small 2 cycle engines in the world, their stuff is good. i have been told that they make a lot of parts for the scandinavian and german brands. either of these is better than the box store cheapies made in taiwan or china.
