Hi Dick
Usually just lurk and enjoy all you folks but
thought I'd chime in on this one. Lots of stuff
been tried before. Heres another.. I got a 1936 Terraplane with a clutch activated, electrically
selected(which gear) vaccum shifted standard
transmission. Worked so well it keeps trying
until the non-syncro gears mesh. I use the emergency manual shift lever most of the time.

Ahhh, the old Electric Hand; as I recall, the wiring etc looked like someone dropped a plateful of spaghetti...I don"t think I ever saw one that worked...

I am thinking that the Heider tractor used the same style transmission.

Hi...Yup (electic hand, little lever on the
sterring col.) the wiring looks just like that.
Trouble usually is in that little lever switch.
but kind of a mess no matter how you look at it.

Seems Metz built a car with a trans like that too. No gears to strip, no clutch to slip they claimed!

The Hieder-Rock Island Used a trans like that.
And there was a lawn tractor called Polaron
made in the late 60s.My neighbor had one that
over heated and warped the drive plate. It would only move in spurts. He let us kids play with it after that.

Interesting. Bought a two stage eight horse snow blower during the drought a few years ago for my son who now lives in central Idaho. (One of Idaho's many new immigrants that had only seen a couple winters herebouts didn't think it snowed here and sold it cheap.) Wish I could remember the brand name.
It took #1 son a few weeks to get here for pick up so I puttered around with it and got it serviced and running again.
Anyway, it had a ninety degree drive set up just like your picture. Neat set up. He has used the dickens out of the machine and has been really happy with its performance.

Lots of mowers had the same kind of setup, worked well for a mower, probably not so well for a car
