Wholesaler

Having just lost the last implement dealer in the county,I've seriously been concidering putting in a stock of bearings,chain,weld a sprockets,weld a pulleys,spindles and hubs and selling them out of my farm shop. Anybody know of a wholesaler and have contact information to do such a thing? I've suggested to other businesses around,like the auto parts store,feed store that has about 2 customers a day,that they do it,but they aren't interested. I'm still leary of the whole venture,but somebody has to do something around here. Waiting a day or two,vs driving an hour and a half round trip has to be as big a pain for everybody else around here as it is for me.

Been in the area long? Why don't you head out to the fields where everyone seems to be working like dogs lately and ask some of the local guys what sort of things they would want? You probably already know some things. You might turn that into something with time. Give some thought to why the old place closed too. Might be a reason.

Hey, and never forget!!! You can always lay in a supply of horse stuff and dog food to bring in the crowds...maybe some riding mowers, lawn fertilizer, cheap tools...

See no reson why you cant and do some repair and sell some implements new and used. The down side I see is 1.tax issues for small scale. 2. inventory will kill you. 3. most outfits want a large order like (tisco) $5000 plus. 4. you would have to advertise to promote it and carry enough items to bring people in (feed, horse items). If you do it out of your basement and you and your wife run it you can do it. 5. be ready for insurance issues!!

We've got a guy here that does that. Started out 20 years ago, now its a multikillion dollar business. He carries A & I, TISCO, Granger, Gates hose, Fafnir bearings, and some odd lots. Main thing he keeps is metal, probably 10 grand worth of steel and welding rods. Has an arrangement with the regional compressed gas supplier that sells tanks and he sells oxygen, acetylene, and specialty gasses. You buy your tanks through him, with a 'sold' imprint and trade out for filled 'sold' tanks. He also carries some short line impliments.

Been here 52 years Dave. No way I'm going with the yuppie stuff or any feed. We have TSC and a feed store for that stuff. The last dealer that just closed,I don't know. Parts gal that had been there for 30 years just said the boss said he wasn't going to throw any more money at it. Myself,I think when he took on McCormick tractors after not having a tractor line since Case and IH merged,that was the straw that broke the camels back. All the tractors that he still had on the lot were 06s.They just weren't moving. I've tried working with the auto parts store owner,but he has no ag background and doesn't seem to want advice. His whole selection of ag bearings is a small cardboard box. I know what's needed around here,the stuff I need myself. No need to carry what anybody else already does. My biggest problem is with having somebody here when I'm in the field. I'd have to carry the cell phone and be ready to shoot home in a hurry whether I wanted to or not.

Randy, check with Olgers services, just notrh of Six lakes a couple three miles on M-66. they repair bunches of stuff. Have quite a stock of tractors & implements setting around. Suspect from remarks of other farmers around they have a stock of parts on hand. Never been there, so can"t vouch personally!

I think they're a parts drop off for Bader John Deere. If you need Deere parts they will order them and have them delivered so you can pick them up there. I don't know what they have in the way of general parts,if anything. I was up there once to see about having them split a Deere,but they were backed up. I sent it to Portland.

The local guy in town uses A&I and another company the have a full service shop and sell parts and shortline equipment I think they do alright not get rich quick but a nice income.
