Well heck! That didn't work! :>(

New PS pump came today, strapped that sow on there, put on a new belt, filled it with oil and gave 'er a twist.

Darned thing works toooooo good! Had a 1/4" grade 5 bolt in that forward coupler.

Hit the end of the stroke, belt chirped and it snapped that bolt like a matchstick. Guess I'd better go leave some positive feedback for that ebay guy I bought the torque motor off of. :>)

Oh well, no leaks this time. :>)

Your second picture makes it look like you have Paul Bunyons tractor and that suv in the background is a hot wheels toy. Dave

Allan how much clearance do you have from the fan blades? And how does the pulley go on the crank in front of the fan pulley there. I would like to do something like that for live hyd for mowing hay with an M diesel. I had a pump mounted so that a separate belt ran over the top of the fan belt to run the pump but it would wear the fan belt pretty bad and then slip. My mail should be open if not here [email protected]

Fan "just" clears. I "farmerized" the darned thing too. :>(

Boy, I don't think you can run a live pump with a belt, can ya? Just too much of a load for a belt to handle.

That little PS pump only moves 4gpm, whereas a live system will pump about 12 1/2 gallon. Need some serious gears for that?

I'm in the process of putting on a live pump off of a 400 now. Bolts up to the timing cover and runs off the timing gears.

I see by the photo that you solved your spacing problem with the fan cowl. Simple fix, works and looks fine...got 'er done, didn't it? Give me a sawzall and a metal blade and it'll get fixed, but not so neat as yours. You must've taken the time to mark or score it. Me? I free hand or ad-lib, and when get done I've gotta freehand or ad-lib some back...with duct tape.

with a live hyd pump you could have used a priority valve like this one from oem tractor

I don't like the way they "rob" from the capacity on high demand jobs. Just barely "functional" when using a loader.

I know, got one on my H. Very fine line between okay and not enough oil. That jasper slows things down like ya wouldn't believe.

I think you are right, Allan, you can't run a live pump with a belt, but you can with two belts. I know this because the housemover I work for has hydraulic pumps on their trucks to provide power for raising houses. These pumps are run dirrect off the engine via 2 V-belts.

You bet,

Compressors, big alternators, pumps and the like will operate on two belts easy enough.

Just don't think it is feasible to use just one.

Meh, I run live hydraulics and power steering from my 15 GPM belt drive pump. Runs a B-section v-belt and probably slips at around 900 psi. Plenty of flow and power for most implements.

Lookin' good, Allan! You need to put a doubled-up roll pin in that hole. I tried a bolt in mine as well and sheared it off in no time. Then a single roll pin worked itself out and tore a hole in my hood... finally doubled the roll pin (or one of those heavy-duty coiled pins) and put a wire through it to hold it in.

Char-lyn P.S.pump mount got weak on our M and I wanted live hyd. Took a belt drive hyd. pump from a J.D 95 combine that had 2 pressure ports. Made a new mount for this pump and mounted in same spot. Used same belt and crak pulley altho crank pulley is 1 size narrower than pump pulley. Plumbed 3/8" out to P.S and 3/8" outlet to run 6 remote outlets. (loader/hyd. bucket and grapple and 3 pt. hitch, also sometimes a forklift on 3pt. quick hitch. Loader also has bobcat style quick hitch.) Belt should be 1 size wider but my son found a super-duty belt and pump works as good as any gear drive pump. Tractor is a 1941 so unlikly timing gear would have been heavy enough. Would do it again! Did this about 6 or 8 years and still working good! Armand

A couple or few years ago, someone introduced me to a fella was about 80ish that did similar to his D15. He walked me over and showed me how he rigged it up, even put in a hydraulic cylinder for the power steering. Said he couldn't turn it anymore without it. Man, was he ever proud of that tractor, his flagship, but slowing way down after his wife of decades passed away. Didn't have the heart for it anymore. Wanted to sell me a pretty much mint VAC because couldn't steer it anymore and didn't want it to fall into wrong hands. I should've bought it if for no other reason so he'd know it was barned.

My neighbor has an H with an automotive PS pump on it but I can't remember how its mounted. Another neighbor has an M with a live pump chain driven off the crank shaft, but I wouldn't recomend that. Not only is it noisy and in the way, but I had to take his radiatior out to get fixed after a piece of the connector link went through it. Lee

The hydrolic pumps on John Deere Combines are run by one belt, either a half inch or 5/8", would have to go out to measure and too cold and dark now to do that.

Here's a chain drive on an H, only run at about 1/2 throttle max and in town. Owned by a machine shop...

Or you can do shaft drive with a u-joint:

Have you put a gauge in the line to see what the releif valve is set at.I thought that about 1000psi was enough for that steering system. If that pump is for a car it might be set at 1600 or more.Just a thought.Good luck.

Can you provide more information on the shaft-driven hyd. pump with a u-joint? Maby some part numbers and sources and more pictures? Is this mounted on a Farmall M? Thankyou for any information you can provide. Armand

I believe it is on an H. Never got the specifics on it.

When I was setting up my system I was told that a u-joint would have a harmonic type vibration that would destroy it in short order... even had a bunch of engineers explain it to me so I abandoned the idea... sorry it's just a picture I have.

If you needed a tractor with power steering and good live hyd. why didn't you just buy one ? Next you will be mounting a cab on that old M.
I just don't get it ?

You about have to operate a M or an H that has been updated to get the "feel" of it.

Besides that, there is a heck of a lot of satisfaction in bringing one back from the edge and making them useful again.

Kinda hard to explain.

I agree, I'd rather run my H with all the amenities "added on" than the 544 that came with them standard.

Even my brother and Dad would rather run the old H...
