Will ethanol gas cause my 8N problems?

My compliments to this forum! I can see there is a wealth of great knowledge here.
Has anyone had problems with ethanol gas in their N? I have read advice about running all the gas out of lawnmowers especially over the winter. Should I be doing this with my N? I have been having increasing trouble with it cutting off. Can I check the carb/fuel system for an ethanol problem?

BTW, I found this website that lists stations by state and town that sell ethanol-free gasoline in the U.S. and Canada. pure-gas dot org

If your unit is running and in good condition - should not be a problem. Don't forget- no one told us WHEN ethanol was introduced into the system for the first time - been around for a long time --god **** the oil companies.

don't care what any of the corn growers have to say, but I can tell you from years of experience with many farm tractors/vehicles, it is ok as long as you don't let it set around too long...........my number is 3 months............otherwise it sucks up water & your system is hosed!

I agree, and I always add Seafoam just to be safe. It works for me!

Seadoam is a mix of iso alcohol, naptha and mineral oil.Cant see why adding more alcohol can help the problem.

I use E10 gas in everything from May until end of October when we move home from our summer cottage on the US/Canada border - lawn tractor, mower, chainsaw, weed wacker, tiller, truck, car, Ford 8N. I add stabilizer to everything when we close up for the Winter & have no problems with anything. Ford 8N started up this Spring on the 2nd grunt without even charging battery, same for lawn tractor.

Have had some that set in a vehicle for a year and a half with out any additives and started and ran just fine, no problems.

Ethanol/gasoline is FAR more likely to "boil" in the tank when working the tractor hard on hot days and less tolerant of extended storage periods.

Aside from those issues, you should notice little difference.

I have an 8N that belonged to my Father. I have run this tractor for more then 40+ years. I am the only one that has ever worked on it. I never had a fuel problem until the last several years. Now the fuel vaporizes much easier. I know the hole in the top of the tank is open but that was not enough to handle the vapor on hot days. Raw gas was being pushed out around the tank cap. I drilled a 1/8" hole in gas gage type cap. You can hear the vapor hissing out of the tank for 10-15 minutes when I shut it off after mowing for several hours when it is 80 degrees or more. The tractor runs OK but the gas vaporizing so readily is a little scary. I leave the garage door open for a while when I park it to let the fumes escape. I am glad I no longer smoke.

The ethanol will as others have said vaporize at a lower temp than gasoline leading to boiling in the tank as well as the increased vapors. What was not mentioned is that it also attracts and retains water which if left for a few weeks will surely cause rust to form in unwanted places such as carbs and tanks. Also, ethanol causes corrosion and erosion of many metal as well as rubber parts due to cemical changes. N tractors will run well on 10% so long as they are used frequently and not sitting idle for weeks at a time.

I have had no issues with gas in the 12 years I have own my 1952 8N & 48 8N. I do add a stablizer to every gas can before I fill it. That gas will run two N's, push mower and lawn tractor. No problems in any of them. Also I rarely put 10 gals in the N's usually five at the most. Tractors sit all winter with a once a month start, this is in Wisconsin.

I think it was the EPA, not the oil companies, that mandated the use of ethanol to clean up the air polution in many areas.

Yes, it does boil at a temperature about 2.5 times lower than pure gasoline, so why would anyone be surprised at it boiling in a tank above the engine on a hot day????????????????? :roll:

Mix your own,wont cost 80 bucks a gallon.Iso alcohol is the main ingredient in rubbing alcohol.I paid 2 bucks for a quart of iso alcohol.Naptha is a poor motor fuel.Fellow ran out of gas,Dumped in a gallon of Coleman fuel from his camp gear.He said the pinging was bad but it got him to the gas station.Seafoam calls it pale oil but its mineral oil.You can find out whats in snake oils now.

5 percent kerosene will tame it.We have stickers on the pumps that say Enriched with 10% ethanol.While it lowers the BTUs per gallon.I expect The BATF will lay a 9 buck a gallon tax on it soon.
