Hi John

You made a post on this forum about Winget tractors.. Did you ever find anything out about them?
We have just purchased an old farm in the UK and have our very own working Winget 550.

Hi l have recently purchased a winget 42 tractor, series 3 serial no 214 for a resteration project. l have downloaded a parts manual of the winget web site but the company cannot help any further. The tractor is in good mechanical condition, runs well and everything works but needs tinwork and painting. Can anyone help with any information as l do not even no what colour it should be.

Hi John
We also have a Winget (believed to be a series 3) and I have spent hours searching for information on the internet. This is one rare tractor!! Below is the majority of the information I have been able to come up with which I hope helps. I also have some pictures of our Winget and would love to see pictures of your one.
Best of luck with the renovation.
Kind regards
Mike

The tractor was designed and developed by Winget (A popular dumper truck and concrete mixer manufacturer in the UK). It was launched in May 1966 and is powered by a Lister single cylinder 8HP 552cc aircooled diesel engine.
It has a direct inline mechanical transmission based on dumper truck transmission with 3 forward and 1 reverse gear giving 1.26, 3.1, and 7mph (3mph reverse), manually operated Diff lock with auto release, independent 9" drum brakes. Rear PTO conventional 1 3/8" 6 spline 565 rpm.
Three models were produced, Series 1 with hand operated 3pt linkage, Series 2 live hydraulic lift 4 position position control - 3pt linkage, and Series 3 with front end loader. All had drawbar and a towing eye at the front.
It was constructed using a high proportion of dumper truck components.
A range of equipment was also made - Semi digger ploughs, cultivators, hoes, disc harrow, rotary cultivator, rotary mower, double knife mower, transport box, rear pallet transporter trailers and sprayers.

Original livery on the later tractors was usually yellow (like the dumpers) with green wheels.
As regards the pedigree of the tractor - excellent workhorse, poor brakes, damned noisy, if you use the loader then make sure the wheels are as wide as possible, since the vehicle is liable to tipping on uneven ground, front king-pins and steering are a weakness, and the wheel-weights at the back put additional strain on the joints between the wheel-plates and the half-shafts, so if you put a transport box or large trailer on the back be careful you don"t over-load it and sheer a half shaft.

Mike thanks for the reply.l have included my emial address please send me some pictures if possible, let me have your detils and l will do the same.l have recently sorced a back issue of tractor and machinery which has an article in it on winget tractors, they appear to be all colours. The one that l have got is red and although it has been re painted there is know evidence of it ever being any other colour, it has also a downsweped exhaust which exits under the rear axal. l have also managed to find some spec sheets on winget machinery for the back of the tractors, if you let me have your address l will be happy to send you a copy.
Regards john
