I am reassembling my 8N engine and at various places wire is threaded through bolt heads. I"ve heard this is referred to as "machinest"s wire". Is this some type of "special" wire with special properties I"m unaware of or can any wire be substituted. Can it be aquired at any automotive shop?

The NAPA store in my area has it and any machine shop should also have it. I even saw it for sale at Harbor Freight. If you are doing only one or two engines you will need very little. The machine shop I had my work done at gave me all I will ever need.

The wire that you are referring to is generall known as safety wire.

The wire is used on aircraft engines and other parts of an airplane.

It is stainless steel and comes in various thicknesses. You might check with the local airport and check with a mechanic. They (mechanics) generally have a few spools in their parts cabinets.

The ends of the wire are usually twisted in a 8 turn per inch fashion. You can used a pair of pliers to make the twists.
