Anyone know where to look for engine parts (bearings, rings, sleves, gaskets, etc) for a IH WK 40? From my research it looks like it could have a 298 or 450 engine? How do I differentitate? Where should the serial number be located? Any help would be appreciated

the wk40's engine is called the model FBB. it is 298 cid. it is a truck engine from the D50 series trucks in the 1930's. the tractor serial # is located on the rear gas tank support by the pulley.about the only thing you will find is the rings and maybe gaskets. all the other engine parts are obsolete.you have to look long and hard to find anything. the FBB engine is just a light truck engine and did not stand up in the tractor. thats why some people put the red diamond in them with some fabricating. all i could find was rod brgs so i only turned the rod journals and had to use the same main brgs. been looking for ten yrs for main brgs.

ill second that. its part of the reason i got rid of my 40's i had. only parts are NOS and they are few and very far between. i dont even think you can get gaskets anymore, rings is about it

a RD engine is an EASY swap, but it does take just a little bit of work to do. an RD is 10 times the tractor engine an old FBB could ever be

one other thing, seen lots of FBB engine look good on the outside but cracked internally. they werent meant to be used/mounted in a tractor, they were meant to be used in a truck with RUBBER motor mounts and they simply vibrated to death

The scarcity of parts is why we have "Parts" tractors. There was a "Parts" W-40 in the classified recently.

Also, I believe the early IHC combines had this same engine. I have seen them sell for a good price just for the engine.

i will add that the brgs can be rebabbited, but that is around a 2500.00 problem. just depends on how much you want to put into the tractor.
on these tractors its usually the engine that is always totally worn out. i had 4 w40's and pulled all 4 engines apart and cranks were all worn beyond spec's. the 3 parts ones also had cracks in the blocks between cyl's. i did find all new valves for it though. even the front seal is a major item to find. i believe with today's better oils and running 40wt or 20-50 in them the engine has a better chance of surviving, sinse it wont be running day after day with the governor pinned to the max.they are a neet big old tractor. good luck.
this was also one of the tractors that gave ihc a lot of grief by getting in a hurry to put out a larger tractor before the w9.those shims with the rod brg's was a poor design also. just as the 560 was the next blunder that set them back.

The easiest way to tell a w-40 factory engine from a Red Diamond truck engine is the spacing of the spark plugs. The tractor engine has a big space between plugs 3 and 4, the Red Diamonds are all even spaced. At the back of the block on the mag side the tractor engines say International in the triple diamond, the trucks say Red Diamond. The tractors are wet sleeved the trucks are a dry sleeve. Tom Underwood would be your best source for new parts, last I knew he had a lot of parts.
