Wont crank over!

My neighbor has a 2630 diesel deere that will turn over part way but will not go over all the way. We have been told(mechanic but not a great one) it has antifreeze on top of the pistons and most likely has a crack in head or the head gasket is shot. Does this sound right? He is just going by what he has heard. The oil looks good and its not froze. Any help would be great as he needs it for moving hay.

So what is the condition of your starter motor? How about your battery? Are we sure there is extra resistance in the engine?

To check remove the flywheel inspection plate and roll the engine over with a screw driver. If it turns past the hard spot you can look towards your starter motor, its connections and current supply.

If the engine will not turn over with the screw driver you can check for fluid on top of the pistons by removing injectors to relieve the pressure. If you have no antifreeze in the oil I would find it hard to believe that there is any on top of the pistons. The piston rings would have leaked some into the crankcase if it has sat long enough. You can recheck for water in the oil by removing the drain plug slowly (the water settles to the bottom).

just curious if he can turn it over by hand with the injectors out fast enough to blow water out or if he needs to do it with the starter. i feel like the last person did that you have elctrical problems with either a bad starter, poor connections, weak battery or bad cables. welding cable at parts stores makes good cables. have them put end on them. corrison can build up down inside the cable ends and give you a fit. so if you've had to clean the cables themselves look for swollen up insulation at the end of the cables. just curious if you have tried to pull start it. if you do use the highest gear you can to try to turn it over and maybe even get it on some loose ground so the tires would slide if the engine does want to lock up. good luck.

Also if it has the hi-low option and possibily the reverser DO NOT PULL START THEM !!!!! You will damage the unit. I had to do an expensive rebuild on a hi-low due to someone pull starting it.
