i have a ford 8n tractor, that won’t start, four months ago i put a new carberator in it ran ok , it sits alot but i have a battery maintainer on it to keep the battery charged, it has juice to the switch, juice to the alternator, and it has spark to the plugs, i also checked to see if i was getting gas flow to the carberator and i am, so it’s not a fuel problem, it has a oil bath air filter which i cleaned not to along ago, could it be that the tractor isn’t getting enough air,,,,,,i don’t know what’s going on with this tractor!!! any ideas?..

It doesn't just need fuel flow to the carb, it needs flow through the carb. With the drain plug removed from the bottom of the carb and the valve at the sediment bowl opened, the flow should fill a pint (half liter) jar in 2 minutes or less.

Agree.
Wonder it its just flooded, its easy to do.

Suggest try full throttle, no choke, if no joy, put the throttle at the lowest setting, no kidding,, the lowest,, and try it, still no choke

If/when it starts, it may be only chugging on a couple cylinders, so be tender with advancing the rpms till it clears out.:)
Edit to clarify no choke

Is this a front mount or side mount distributor can make a difference as to how to fix. If front mount are the points set to 0.015?? If side 0.025

It sat up; check for rodent, bird nests clogging air flow.I am not familiar with the air filter setup on your tractor

All I know about that tractor after riding one up and down the Ohio Turn Pike all summer in 1956 is that if your sure you have a fuel problem it is probly the ignition system. Then if your dead sure you have a problem with the ignition system it is probly a fuel problem. I never after that summer I never thought about buying one. Good Luck! Actually it was not all summer because the Turn Pike gave up on it.

You didn't answer if it is front or side mount distributor the reason it doesn't start can have to do with that and if we don't know which it is it is hard for us to help you help your self!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why would he answer? It's not his problem and he didn't ask the original question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a two-way street. You started the thread Monday, you signed in this morning (Wednesday), please at least acknowledge some of the suggestions made and answer the question of which distributor it has. If you can't get back to work on it for a few days tell us.

But if the points are set wrong it could well be the problem and this is why your on my ignore list

Dude. If you're responding apparently I'm not being ignored. If others are on your ignore list because of your self-inflicted incomprehension that choice is solely yours. If I'm now on it, congratulations to me.

You're the one who came in here quoting the wrong person who had nothing to do with your question. Perhaps you'd be better off ignoring yourself.

Has the distributor been lubricated recently ? Google that for the how to.
If you can get help try tow starting the tractor. Struggled with these things
when they had all your symptoms and tow starting got them going more times than
I can count.

wow, i’m suppose to answer everybody that replies? you people are like a bunch of old women,,,,,,DUDE!!!!!
If this is a reply to me, my point was you can at least let us know you are still here and reading what is offered. Many come here ask a question and disappear; we never know if we helped or not. Then there is info that comes into play to give a proper answer, such as if your 8N has a front or side mount distributor. The early 8Ns used the front mount like the 9N and 2N, during the production run they changed to the side mount distributor.

I am not saying you need to answer everyone, just let us know you are still around. It doesn't appear you have answered a thing asked or suggested in this thread to date, other this your post (#15) I quoted here.

Other things to answer. You say it has an alternator. Does that mean it has been converted to 12-volt negative ground? If 12-volt does it have a 6-volt coil with a resistor between it and the switch or has it been changed to a true 12-volt coil (wound for 12-volts) that does not require an external resistor?

Have you checked the gas flow through the carb as Non-farmer suggested?

Well if you don't answer a question like I ask it is impossible for use to help you help your self. The 8N cam out at first with front mount distributor and the point are set to 0.015 and if you set them to 0.025 it will not run right or in many cases will not run at all. Or if it is side mount distributor andthe point need to be set at 0.025 and if set to 0.015 it will not run but either way can have spark

This is what Derek Bieri users too!
