Worthless project

Figured I would get some expert advice here before I wasted any of my hobby time on this wreck. Bought this cub cheap. Guy restoring it passed last fall, his son sold it to us. Claims the final drives, transmission, touch control and motor were gone through and anything that needed replacement was done. But with no paperwork or proof I should probably assume it's all just scrape metal.

The words of wisdom from a few on here should be gold! Lol...... I can't wait. From the sound of another post if I sell this finished tractor I would be a shyster used car salesman....

Parts look good, you have dealt with these old tractors to most times figure out if the seller is lying or not just need to talk with them awhile. And sure we all get burnt some times but it goes with the territory.
I bought a AC D15 about a year ago, that the owner said hadn't been run in over 10 years.Said it had less than 100 hrs on a rebuilt motor and rebuilt transmission.Got it home and had it running in a few minutes everything apparently just like he said.

Look like the guy was doing a good thorough job. Check everything you can to be sure it's good internally. You're not a shyster unless you lie about the condition.

The cylinders look a lot better than the last one you bought in pieces. Have it running by lunch time today?

TF... I'm waiting on the 'wisdom' of rustred........ I'm thinking this cub should take a couple days, im currently waiting on gaskets, seals, and a couple bearings.

I am not an expert by any means. I do enjoy a good tinkering though. From the pictures I would go for it. I would look the engine over real good and reassemble if that checks good. I purchased a 49 Cub at an auction the 3rd of March. It was advertised as a non runner but the engine turned over and had good compression. The engine had been rebuilt recently with .020 over pistons and all new valves. After replacing the head and rebuilding the carb it runs very well. You never know your project could be another keeper.

The worst tractor I bought was from a preacher. Talked to him on phone said it was in good shape. Went to the church retreat to pickup. Four hour drive. Had to pull to get started could see for the smoke. I told him I said I would buy my word is good. Said he had run it. Who said PREACHER dont lie.
Dont trust no one.

I'll say you are saving Yesterday's tractors one Cub at a time, having fun and should be congratulated.
Anyone giving you crap about making a buck is jealous. Don't pay any attention to them.
Keep doing what you are doing.

It'd be hard to take somebody's word for it when they were not involved in the work done, and is now (was) selling it. But the tractor looks to be torn apart pretty good already, and it wouldn't take to much more dis-assembly and investigating to see if the work claimed done, actually was. That is, (if) you are really doubting what this guy said.

Personally, I don't get to picky about drivetrain when I'm getting a non runner back running again. If it's got issues there, that can be dealt with later if needed when the tractor is back running again.

Some people on here think a superb professional mechanic job should be carried out on all projects. They apparently haven't worked on projects with no dollars to spend. And you about got to be a little bit that way considering the re-sale value on most of these rigs don't warrant getting spent money back.

You have more than enough knowledge and experience that you can successfully follow any dreams you can afford.

Many of the new posters here do not have much knowledge or experience working on old tractors, so I try to be realistic as possible with them. Bringing an old tractor back to life that has been parked in the fence row for twenty years in a weekend for $100 of parts is just not realistic for most people.

In my profession we do a thing called sampling. Check out a couple of the easier things to verify. If they are done as he claimed, assume he was telling the truth and maybe you can just move on and wrap her up.
