Very common problem and is one of the weakness of the XT190 popping out of gears and not an easy or cheap fix. I knew an old tractor dealer and by old I mean he has since passed away that would not have one of time on his lot even if you paid him to take it. In my area there a low $$ high HP tractor as in around $2500 max for a good one

Thats not bad guy down the road paid way more than that to have his brakes fixed on his 4440 JD. I have an gentleman down the road from me that will fix just about any brand but on his time schedule. So it may take him a while to get to it but he seems to know what he is doing and everyone seems happy with his work.

Not knowing any of the past history of the tractor, I'd suspect it needs the deep shift 3/4 shifting rail from a very late model 185 tractor and possibly a new 3/4 fork, as it will be worn. I've fixed dozens like that over the years.

. P/n for deep shift 3/4 rail is 70261443 and the new fork is 70261385.

Dr. Allis, you mention "deep shift". Does that mean the parts numbers you noted are different than what came on the original 190 XT? If so that is good to hear.

Thanks.

Paul

YES. It will shift into 4th gear (7th-8th speeds) farther, which usually takes care of gear jump out.

Was this jumping out of gear a problem with later tractors like the 175 and 185 tractors - I think these were built up to 1980?

Thanks!
Bill

Let's get a couple of things explained so there is zero confusion. 170's and 175's have a nearly identical transmission to the D-17 and share NOTHING in common with 180-185-190-190XT-200's. The common complaint is jumping out of THIRD gear when going downhill with a push behind the tractor. This is most generally caused by people who constantly GRIND IT INTO GEAR all the time, as third gear is the most used gear in the transmission. Third gear is 5 & 6 speeds. The 4th gear thing applies to 180's thru 200's built before 1974 or so. A shift rail that engages deeper into 4th gear was developed. These same tractors are also victims of operators who shift on-the-fly into road gear, again grinding the tar out of the shift couplings. Eventually when you grind away enough iron, things start slipping out of gear. They will pull a plow all day long, but lift the plow and head down a steep hill and it might jump into neutral.

Have a 200. Used it for near 20 years so far and since day one it will jump out of high gear when on the highway and going down a hill. Solution- Hold the shifter when on the highway going down hill. Worked for 20 years. LB

This is what the new improved parts will do. The way you do it is unsafe in the sense that you have one hand busy holding the gearshift. Holding it in by hand can cause undo pressure and wear on those internal parts, where correct updated parts are at a preset position.
