Your 1st tool

Was trying to think.. what was the 1st tool I bought? Took me a while... a set of Bonnie wrenches, Bonnie socket set, 5/16" - 3/4" to work on my 65 Chevy Impala. Still got most of em. Think Im missin a 9/16" wrench. I know I blew out the ratchet years ago.

On the flip side...last tool I bought was a Dremel multi-max about year and a half ago. Used it weekend before last, the switch is shot.

An S-K 1/2" drive socket set as the old man didn"t own any sockets. When I was 12 I wanted to take apart our old lawn mower when it gave up the ghost and found I could not get at some of the bolts without one. Later, our renter "borrowed" it and lost a couple sockets and the ratchet so I "borrowed" his battery charger. I still use it!

S-K 3/8 drive socket set .It was a birthday gift. I needed it to get junk lawn mower engines for mini bikes. [Go karts and mini bikes blew alot of engines because no kid ever changed the oil]. Next tool was a Craftsman torque wrench to torque the small engine head bolts. Thats all we knew was you had to torque the head bolts. I had a Bonney ratchet from a sale recently and it did not look like it could be disassembled for a rebuild.

My grandmother took me to the hardware store in Great Bend (it was some special reason for us to go to GB) and got me a new pliers with a leather belt loop holster. I still wish I had that holster. Everything now is too stiff to be useable.

Used those pliers yesterday. They never leave the pocket of my overalls.

I am with dr sportster below. A S&K 3/8 socket set and a set of India made wrenches. The wrenches where George brand. I still have the socket set in the kitchen cabinet. I took my bike apart so many times the bolts would not stay tight. LOL.

Then Dad bought a few junk hand mowers for me to tear apart. I "worked" on them for a few years and then started on farm equipment for real with my Grand Father.

Got my first tools when I was about 7 or 8 years old. A diamalloy 6" adjustable wrench and a Dunlap (Sear's) screwdriver set. I don't have the originals, but replacements. The last one was a Bosch hammer drill.

A set of Powercraft wrenches from Wards. Got them when I left home. Still use them even tho I have a Snap-on set now.

A hammer was my first tool. Grandpa gave it to me.
My first set of tools that I bought was $500 of Craftsman. I still have almost all of the originals. I remember how mad my dad got way back then for spending that kind of money on tools. But he never once complained about how handy they were when he was using them. My brother said he thought he hated mechanic work. After I bought the tools, he said he likes mechanic work with real tools. Guess he was referring to dads tool box with had a pipe wrench and a hammer. LOL

Bought my first while serving with the USAF in Puerto Rico. Bought a set of open end, a set of box ends, a set of 1/2 drive sockets all to 1 1/14 inches along with a 3/8 drive socket set, all Craftsman. This was in 1962 and still have most of them except for those that got planted. None of them that were planted ever germinated.

Probably a set of pliers, screwdriver, adj. wrench, etc. given to me by aunt & uncle when I was 16. Still have most of them in the toolbox.

Back about 53 years ago when I got my first car, a 55 Ford which needed a lot of work, I bought a set of Craftsman tools for, as I recall, about $39.95. Included were 1/4", 3/8", & 1/2" drive socket sets with minimal sockets, combination wrenches & ignition wrenches, & maybe a few screwdrivers. Still have & use most of the tools & the steel hip roof box they came in.

I rode my bike down to the Western Auto Store and bought a little set of 5 cheap open end wrenches, prolly cost $1.39 back in "55....

First set of "tools" I owned was when I was around 5 - my dad got me some kind of kit I've never seen since.

It had a the usual hammer and screw drivers - but also a little circular saw with a blade that could actually cut through the styrofoam "wood" that it came with.

I imagine some kid pinched his fingers in it once and that's when it went off the market.

But I had a lot of fun with that set - actually being able to cut through something made me feel like I had hit the big time.

A few years after that I got one of those wooden folding boxes full of carpentry tools. I imagine it came from sears. Pretty good set for a 7 year old.

Set of Thorson tools from the local Coast to Coast store. Still have some, but lost most over the 50+ years. Never broke any.

First tool, a Crescent pocket pliers. Started carrying one of those all the time when I was about 10 years old. Do everything from fix fence, tighten the nut on a bicycle to pull a tooth.

Still one of the most usefull tools to have in your pocket.

An S-K socket set when I was in high school, back in the 40s. First power tool was a 1/4" drill. They didn"t come in 3/8s back then.

Im thinking the first was a small SK 3/8 socket set which is long gone except the little green metal box it came in. The last was the Miller Syncrowave 350.
