Your first pull?

Anyone remember their first pull? I thought this would be interesting and make some pretty good story telling.

I remember my first pull, Made a set of wheelie bars, didn't do anything to my hitch at the local fair. Pulled the sled about 5 feet and the U part of my hitch broke on my H. Man was I embarrassed and mad at myself. Now im quite proud of my tractor, If only I had the income I wish I had to make it the way I want. Maybe one day.

Happy 4th of July everyone!

First pull was on a 1953 super m at the ionia free fair out of 31 tractors in 5500 class i took 6th place and won 20.00 I was hooked for life been doing lots of pulling since then!I still love that old super m but haven,t pulled her in years.

Year...2000, tractor...40 something Oliver 77 (belonged to a friend), place Monroe NC County Fairgrounds, placed...2nd, results...HOOKED for life.

My first pull was in the fall of '98 at a fair with my first old Ford, a 901. I had done a little investigation into pulling so I had proper hitch height and had my weight right at 4500. I met a fellow there with a Ford 900 with 16.9 x28s. He told me that I probably wouldn't do well in such a heavy class, but you never know. Just before the class I got the 901 to the start area, then walked a little way away to watch someone else. When I turned to go back I couldn't even see my little Ford amongst all the big JDs, Olivers, Farmalls, Cockshutts, etc. Well, we gave it our best and I placed second. I had to go on the Dyno, and she showed a whopping 30HP. with a little more time and experience I found out that I had done well because it was such a soft track. Needless to say I was hooked, and I have managed to have a good time for 13 years without putting much money into it.

M-5 Moline with cab and loaded tires. Ended up in the 10,000 class. Way under hp for the class which was 100 hp max. The MM was app. 60. Last place, but sure was fun!

Tyler, Mn fair in 1986. Pulled my 49 SC Case that I had just redone, didn't do too bad considering I brought a knife to a gun fight! In 87 I bought my 49Dc "Brutus" out of a hay meadow. It has won hundreds of placings over the years. We've built other tractors but still take him out now and then. It won the 6000# and 6500# 3mph classes a few weeks ago! The engine hasn't been apart since 1990 when I put in M&W pistons and a Berry cam. Gotta get loaded up soon to go to the 3rd pull in 3 days!

When I was about 15 the farm I worked for had an old M in the back of a shed he said his grandpa bought brand new and hadn't run in years. I asked if I could dig it out get it runnin paint and pull it, I was excited when he said yes. Took it out found cracked block. Put a super m engine in it got it ready and painted it. I literally sprayed it the morning of the pull got I back together with enough time to race there and still be late. In all the scrambling I didn't put the bolt that holds the battery box in place back in and the positive post shifted over against the choke rod and drained I on the way to the pullt. Pop started it and toward the sled I went, I signed up on the way to the scale, scaled in hooked up tightened the chain and that was it. Soon as the rpms fell it killed. I guess on the drive down not only did the battery drain from being grounded it drained it completly so it wouldn't take charge and the alt couldn't keep up unless it was at higher rpms. It was a big county fair I was so embarrassed in front of all those people but been hooked ever since. I pull as much as the wallet and time allow

My first pull was in 1997 at two top ruritan in mercersburg,pa. I was on a Case 400 super deisel in the 7500lbs farm stock class. I was like 7000 lbs, last place, but I was so proud. I pulled that tractor for a few years(it was not mine), and in 2002 i bought my wifes grandfathers john deere 630 at his estate sale, and have become pretty competitive in 8500 and up classes. still loving it!

My first pull was last year where I finished dead last in every class that I pulled in. Regardless, I was hooked. One of the guys that I pulled against was a co-worker that beat me by a considerable margin. While loading up for the next class, he came over and said "Better luck next time!" Needless to say, that motivated me more than ever. We brought the tractor home July 5th of last year and in less than a years time we went from dead last to being very competitive in all the classes that we pull in. Happy pulling!!!

Oddly enough I can"t remember my very first. I used to get so worked up and nervous I"m not surprised. I ran an IH 460 Utility pulling stoneboat and did ok right from the start. What really got me hooked was all the 2nd places I got and how close to first I was. It was for the love of the chase. Guess that"s why I"m always picking the next best puller as the next guy I"ve guy I"ve got to find a way to beat. Gotta say, I"ve beaten some guys I never thought I"d be able to run with. That"s kinda cool.

It was about 1968, took my dad"s 4010 diesel to the county fair. Had widened the rims and took off the 15.5 X 38 and put on Armstrong 18.4 with no fluid in them. drilled another hole in the drawbar and turned in around, with a D ring bolted to it. and had the weights moved out 2 ft. Came in about 4th or 5th in 12000 NA class. Just has one other weight but entered it in the 13500 Farmer class, and came in second behind my neighbor"s 1030 Case with a MW blower. Also I took the leaf spring out and 2 of the Gov weights. My son still has that tractor and it does have a leaf spring in it but not the gov weights. It will still turn 3000 RPM. I never could win that class 12000 NA . Was over to the local JD dealer a few years ago going threw there junk looking for some parts and I found a 4020 diesel tank with the top cut out and a small tank inside plus a pressure tank. Asked the old parts man, he said I thought every body knew those guys were running Nitrous! LOL Vic PS hauled them then on a F600 truck and was always looking for a dock. How times have changed!

Attempted to pull my 1939 JD H for the first time in 1993. Many of you have heard the story before. Grandstand full of people watching as I couldn't move the sled. I managed to jerk it about a foot after 3 tries. Let me tell you, it seemed like a long drive to the other end of the arena after that.

I learned that day that a JD H really isn't a pulling tractor and went on to bigger and better tractors. The rest is history and I'm still excited about every pull I go to.

Used our '47 2N at County fair in stock #3000 class...had a great pull, took second to a Super C by 6 inches and was hooked...started pullin' our Super C after that though!

My experience was quite similar with my 39 H. Much to my amusement, most Michigan club rules specify:

"no use of governor overide linkages even if factory installed (for example: John Deere H)"

Oh, the horror of such an event. On the upside, there was rumored to be a 42hp H in the area twenty years ago. I guess it was a sight to behold.

14 years old on dads stock 44 farmall m. Had to use stock weights,so i weighted up to 7500 with wheel weights. Factory hitch 3 feet out the back of the tractor. Hooked up took off front end came up about 4 feet in the year. By the time I got 75 feet the front end was so high they flagged me and every one was laughing. just laughed along.

My first pull has been my best pull ever. Got a 52 JD A that was a fence row tractor. Got it to run and put a new seat on it. Went out with it just like it was and it got great traction and was perfectly balanced on that track. It actually won its class. 6000 Div1. They brought me down to get teched and I found out about the RPM rule. I was over and got DQed. LOL Have been working with the tractor ever since and can not get it to hook like that again. Some day...
