We just got the TO35 running after a partial tear
down and paint job.
One of the issues was lifter noise. Replaced the
cam and lifters, though it showed some pitting it
wasn't really worn. Discovered the rocker shaft
and rocker bushings were severely worn, replaced
both.
Started it up and the noise is still there. Reset
the valve lash, even checked with it running. Now
I'm satisfied this is not valve noise, even though
it sounds exactly like a loose rocker adjustment.
The engine runs and idles fine. Looked at the
valve springs, hand tested them, all appear good.
The rockers are oiling good. Whats strange is the
noise is intermittent, sometimes barely there,
sometimes really annoying!
But what tells me it's not lifter noise, is by
pulling the #4 plug wire, the noise goes away. I
went through the engine about 20 years ago, new
pistons and liners, new bearings. It's been used
sparingly since then, still has the same good oil
pressure, no smoke or blow-by.
I'm thinking loose wrist pin or loose/cracked
piston skirt. Is this a common failure for this
engine? Any ideas?
Thanks!
