Zenith carb

I needs som opinions. Should I rebuild my TSX361A or go ahead and buy a Zenith replacement carb? Will I get that much better performance? This carb replacment/overhaul is in addition to a full engine nad head rebuild.

I had the Zenith 24T2 off my TEA20 professionally rebuilt including bushing the body to stop air leaks. Works fine, it is original and cheaper than the new replacement carby.

Personal choice I guess.

Did the rebuild make a difference? I have play in the the throttle shaft and I suspect that creates unwanted air ingress? My tractor is TOTALLY rebuilt, except for that, and I suspect it might be why it doesn't run as smooth as I thought it would.

The throttle shaft was bushed with a brass sleeve in the carby body and new shaft installed - no air leaks. I am sure the carby improved performance but I also installed a Pertronix Ignitor and high voltage coil at the same time and credit that with the majority of the vast improvement in starting and performance.

Professional reconditioning of the Zenith carby was only half the price of the Aus$400 (US$300) for the new replacement, non original carby.

I'm having the same fuel specialists recondition the triple SU carbies on my Jaguar XKE, but I'm also installing a Pertronix Ignitor in the E Type, so it may be hard to tell which gives the best improvement.

Like the SU carbies, I don't think there was anything fundamentally wrong with the Zenith carby, after all they were around for at least 50 years. Simple, a bit "agricultural" but they did the job.

Just to inform you. The Zenith 24 T2 carb will come during the fall... not a look alike, not a replacement, but a reproduction of the old carb... produced under license.
Will be offered by Sparex, only.

The M-S carb is about as rugged and as simple of a carb as you will find. They are easy to rebuild and parts are readily avaiable. You didn't say why you felt you need a new carb? If it's a performance problem, the carb is usually not the problem;the ignition system is 80-85% of the time. 10-15 % of the time is a dirty fuel system/dirty carb that may eventually need rebuilding and the 5% are from other causes.

If I put as much time, effort and $'s as you apparently have( and I did about 7 years ago)for under $50 and your time, I'd rebuild the M-S TSX 361A. You just need a gallon of real carb cleaner and a full rebuild kit for the carb. In includes new air seals for the throttle shaft and a new thottle shaft. The Ford N Forum has a step by step proceedure of how to rebuild an M-S in the Research & Info Section under Articles.

Your $'s, you choice.

Jerry, I am not actually looking to replace the carb. I had just heard that the Zeniths were better than the TSX. The rebuild kit is about $35 and the Zeniths are about $200. I just figured that if the Zenith was considerably better than I would go the extra $$$.

Unless there is noticable physical wear or damage to carb body, I recommend just rebuilding it. Most the wear components are in the rebuild kit, and you get all the shaft seals also.

I agree with Jerry, The MS carb is pretty bullet - proof and reliable, many "carb running problems" are really ignition problems. Weak spark or timing.

I can't comment on the Zenith since I have no experience with them. You might try a search in the archives of this forum and get more info to help you make your decision. Are you having problems with the how your engine runs and performs that makes you think that a new carb will help? By the way, ther eare new M-S carbs available too, if you are looking for a new one.

George, Jerry , et al.

I have not had any issues with the carb except for a sticky float but I split the carb and fixed that. It does need a full rebuild since I noticed that the tip of the main needle is actually bent and th shaft seals are badly worn.

Other than that I have the welcome big fat spark and "flat rock" fuel flow.

This may be useful information for someone.....

Talking today to the guy that reconditioned my Zenith carby, he said he line bored the carby body and bushed the throttle butterfly shaft back to standard diameter.

However he suggests that is being pedantic - oversize throttle butterfly shafts are available and in most cases an oversize shaft will fix the problems.

Looked up his charge - cost me Aus$165 (approx US$130) to acid clean and totally recondition the carby with all new parts.

Judt FYI, I have a 48" Allis that was running like a top until I let her set for a while. I guess sediment formed in the bottom of the carb so I took it off and tried to rebuild it. I rung a brass set-screw off in the bottom of the carb so I called this site and ordered a new carb. They sent me a Zenith replacement with detailed instructions on how to alter it to fit. Welllll, this thing is junk. My tractor has no power, it fouls plugs and it is very hard to start. I have done everything I know how to tune it, adjust it, change the heat range and gap of the plugs, etc., but nothing helps or even makes a difference. I am going to send the Marvel off and have it rebuilt and use the Zenith carb for fence fill. Another lesson learned!!!
