"Carburetor, New - With reversible linkage. This Zenith carburetor outperforms the original carbs used on: 77, 88HC, Super 88, 770, Super 77, 880, 1550, Industrials using Continental FG226 Engine. Replaces Marvel-Schebler # TSX181, TSX374, TSX610, TSX755, TSX903, TSX499, TSX397, TSX755, TSX903, TSXU835, TSXU836. Center to center on the 2 mounting bolts is 2 3\8 inches. Made in USA, 1 year warranty. (Part No: 14991)"

Anyone out there have an opinion on this 'outperforms' statement? Is this:

a. New Zenith vs old Marvel Schebler (rebuilt)?
b. New Zenith vs old Marvel Schebler (worn)?

What does 'outperforms' mean? Better economy, more power, easier starting, more responsive, more reliable, easier to tune . . . ?

I'm learning on the hoof here with an Oliver 88 and wish to learn from other's experience/expertise seeing as I have none.

Ive used 2 Zenith carbs 1-on a 550 and another on a 1550 and have been happy with them ,just got sick of messing with Marvel Scheblers all the time the only downfall is that they are aluminum and some say that the bolt flange will warp over time, well see

What is the problem with your carburetor? If one carburetor replaces all of those why did not Oliver use 1 or 2 carburetors instead of spending a lot of time and money to match the tractor? I worked fora dealer for 16 years. we sold 2 new carburetors in that length of time. One we had orders too by the warrenty department.

Nothing wrong with a marvel Schebler. Very, very easy to clean and re-build, and kits are readily available.

One thing to worry about when a carburetor "suddenly works poorly" is the concern about poor gasketing. The carburetor gasket to the flange is one potential problem, as is the head gasket. You want to be careful you don't have a bad or leaking gasket before you start rebuilding or buying a new Zenith or other carburetor. Poor gasketing is something you want to think of first, not after you buy a kit or new carb.

Also, make sure hose clamps are tight and the hoses are not worn and leaking as they can easily be. Think air and air pressure first.

OK fellas, here's the deal. There is nothing really wrong with my carb at present and I have no gasket leaks.

The tractor starts with only a slight puff of unburned fuel with the choke on and, once warm, idles well but a bit rich.

I only wanted feedback on whether I should re-build and tune-up the M-S or go for a Zenith.

If the M-S carbs work well, I'll just recondition it and tune it up right.

I have to do some work on the old girl as I'm only getting about 1/2 throttle at the moment and the plugs are a bit wet so she's too rich.

The carb looks like it hasn't been touched in 30 years so I think it's worth a clean-up and tune. While I'm at it, I figured I'd rebuild it with new gaskets, needles, jets etc.
