Dearborn Plow

I have been looking for a 2 bottom 3 point plow. I have seen some Dearborn plows that don't have chains to center the coulters and keep from damaging the tires. Do all Dearborn plows supposed to have chains?

you mean the check chains, the economy plows didn't have those, if you wanted I suppose you could get a newer coulter assembly with an anti sway system or universal coulters. so you don't need chains

MIne has the check-chains for the coulters, the tiny scrapers for the coulters, and slatted moldboards. Loaned it to my BIL and he said he hit a rock and broke the coulter shaft, then threw the broken-off coulter away_. I also have a new set of points set back.

Hope you aren't planning on letting him borrow anything else! Throwing away parts that broke to a borrowed item is a big red flag to me, family or not! Stuff happens but some parts are not easily replaced with new but may be rewelded if need be.

My single bottom Ford 110 coulter finds & cuts its own path in front of the plowshare.
Didn't think any needed limiter chains.

We are VERY upfront with everyone:
"We do not borrow; we do not loan."
If a neighbor asks to borrow our tiller, I may offer to just do the tilling myself.
I broke this long-standing rule several years ago and loaned a cement mixer to a longtime friend who had mixed with me many times, so I didn't foresee any risk.
It came back with hardened concrete, at least two shovels full in the barrel.
I angrily turned him right around and sent him home with the mixer and said, "Bring it back when it is how you borrowed it!!"
NEVER AGAIN!!

Yup. He died about 6 years ago from the effects of Agent Orange, so that ended the borrowing. A new coulter is NLA, so the used market is my only source. I've never gotten around toit though.
IMO the check-chains are needed to prevent anything from bumping the coulter while the plow is raised and spinning it backwards before entering the ground again. A full restoration has been at the bottom of my honey-do list for years. Thankfully all the slats are good and solid, they too are NLA.

Its a bad feeling when you discover a coulter has gone M.I.A. this happen to me. I kept looking at the end of the row where I would be lifting the plow I got lucky and found it. I don't know about hitting a tire they will hit the PTO I chain mine and modify as needed.

I have this one for sale now- the one we had when I was a kid said "Dearborn", this one says "Ford"

I believe that one is an early Ford 101.
They were Red in the 1950s - after 1962 they were Blue and had trip bottoms.
I've had a later 101 (2-16") with trips and coulters for 15 years at least.
Had a few Dearborn and Ferguson plows in the past. Can't recall any of them having check chains on the coulters. I don't think they ever did but could be wrong.
Coulters are nice for cutting sod. If you are plowing every year you really don't need them.

I had a Ferguson 2-14 that I used behind my 8N, but removed the coulters pretty quickly. I was plowing down corn stubble, and they plugged up easily. You can see a small chain hanging down in the photo, and I suspect it was indeed a check chain for the front coulter. The rear chain must have already been missing, or perhaps was deemed not needed by the manufacturer.
