1965 ford 3000

With the wires connected as you have them, test and answer each question. MAKE SURE THE TRACTOR IS IN NEUTRAL!

1. Voltage at the battery?

2. Is the solenoid mounted to a good ground?

3. Voltage at the starter terminal of the solenoid?

4. Voltage at the battery (#1) terminal of the ignition switch?

5. Voltage at the start (#5) terminal of the ignition switch when turned to start?

6. Voltage at the start (S) terminal of the solenoid when the key is turned to start?

7. Voltage at the I terminal when the key is turned to start?

8. If you use a jumper wire touched between the battery cable of the solenoid and the solenoid S terminal does the starter engage and crank.

Let's start with those. Also pictures of your mounted (and wired) solenoid and starter.

Sorry, my error on #3, that should have read "Voltage at the battery cable terminal of the solenoid?"

The 0.2 volt reading on #5 and the fact that the starter cranks when you use a jumper wire between the battery cable post of the solenoid leans me towards a bad switch.

To further pinpoint a possible bad ignition switch try using a jumper wire between the ignition switch battery terminal and the ignition switch start terminal to see if the starter cranks the engine. This will tell you if the wiring from the ignition switch through the neutral safety switch and on to the solenoid S terminal is good.

It would be good to figure out where the brown wire with the red stripe goes, which you show in the picture you put in your first post as being on switch terminal #3. That terminal is not used on a gas engine tractor. It is possible it is an extra wire in the harness, but without finding the other end it is an unknown.

The jumper wire worked. The brown and red wire went somewhere at some point and time. I found the other end taped up to cover up a burned up terminal. Like I said this tractor has been a wiring nightmare but I've been working on trying to get it at least runable.

If the jumper wire worked when it was touched between the switch #1 and #5 terminals, it sounds like a bad switch to me.
