    Thank you very much Jon. My condolences to the fellow. I can't say wether or not it was hard starting, but it did have 1 1/4'' sleeves and pistons instead of the factory 1 1/8". Could this increase in displacement make up for the volume added to cylinder by the recessed valve? Just thinking...

    Thanks for all the advice. I suppose I ought to start looking for a shop… I can make progress on the engine in other ways for now. Kinda hard to believe that someone would grind enough off to drop the valve 3/16” - I wonder if it was multiple valve jobs or if someone got real grinder happy.
