Ford 8N - things to look for ????

If it has an alternator, make sure that actually charges the battery. Also, if there's no thermostat, install one, and then see if the water pump leaks (a sure sign of a worn water pump). I'd recommend installing a battery cutoff switch as an early step before you have much of a chance to...

    8-N hard starting

Make sure you have a fully-charged battery. (And if it's been converted to 12V, make sure the alternator is actually functional to charge the battery.) A drained battery could very well be a contributing factor here.

Is my 8N a good candidate for electronic ignition?

Purists will disagree, but I'm a huge advocate of EI (assuming the tractor is wired correctly in the first place). There's a reason why automobiles ditched points decades ago. I can tell you from personal experience that I had a very contrary-to-start 8N which didn't like starting on wet days or...

    Rust reformers/converters

Phosphoric acid is an etcher, but not that great as a converter or as corrosion protection alone. If you use it to etch steel/iron, I'd advise immediately coating with an encapsulating paint (POR-15, etc.); otherwise, the metal will be vulnerable to oxidation.

    8N Key Switch Wiring

On these tractors, there's no shortage of ways that sketchy old wiring can short or have impedance issues. Installing a battery cutoff switch (that you use religiously) can help to alleviate dead batteries for lack of new wiring.

Coolant Seep Around New Water Pump

Resist the urge to dump in stop-leak products as a default fix, or things like drain cocks can cease to function afterward.

What temp should 8n run when hot?

Assuming everything is fine (good coolant, decent radiator, thermostat) these machines really don't run hot. My '49 8N doesn't even have the shroud, and it's never boiled over in the Missouri heat.

8N Front Distributor Points Not Lining Up

I sincerely hope you get a quick resolution on this. But honestly, it was this very sort of fussiness that led me to go with electronic ignition on my 8N, and I've never looked back. I know that there are those who consider EI to be blasphemy, but if you're a non-mechanic with a tractor 70+...

    Manuals

An interesting story from a simpler era: in the mid-'80s, I was a kid interested in owning an 8N someday. Since this was before the internet, information was not the easiest to obtain, pre-dating the arrival of the farm supply chain retailers in my are . Naively, I wrote to Ford's tractor...

One more reason I'm glad I switched to 12 Volts

As a non-mechanic, I value 12V for its durability/utility (in situations like this certainly), and (although purists may disagree) I like electronic ignition for its user-friendliness and ability to start during moist conditions.

Alternator conversion determining correct belt size

Actually, the belt on my 8N is 45" long, a Gates PowerRAted 6945 (#5l450K, with a thickness measurement of 21/32" on the label).

    Ford 2N starting problem

Just a thought, but all of these tractors are pretty fussy about having a good ground. So check the chassis ground to make sure that's a good connection. (I had to grind off some paint on mine that was causing an intermittent connection.)

Alternator conversion determining correct belt size

And it's important to make sure you have the belt correctly aligned with the alternator. Something as simple as the placement of the washers with the mounting hardware can offset the alternator from the pulley, so go slow and pay attention if you happen to take the alternator off entirely to...

    8n alternator help

I'd just take the alternator in to get it looked at by a shop that rebuilds them, and then if necessary, get it rebuilt. (I had a Delco alternator that wasn't charging the 12V battery on my recently-purchased 8N, and took into a local shop to get it looked at in 2021. They rebuilt the whole...

    8n paint

Agree 100% on the Ford red color being too orange--I found that out a few years ago, when I recoated the front bumper on my 8N. (The thing practically glowed in the dark!) The TISCO equivalent is much more appropriate.
