    MT belt drive pulley

I recently restored a 49 M with a belt pulley. The belt pulley is made of paper (amazing) held together with steel rods. There was a chunk missing from one side and the owner did not want to pay for a rebuilt one (about $300). He said he would not use it, so I took some wood, cut to fit...

JD 40 steering gear grease or oil?

Twice now (an M last summer and a 40 currently) I have found a grease zerc installed on top of the steering gear box in place of a 1/4" pipe plug. Manuals all say to use 140 wt gear oil. Was the use of grease instead of oil a JD Tech bulletin improvement or just a operator improvement? 2nd...

JD 40T front wheel rim offset?

Thanks Rob. Just sent email to 2 Cyl plus. The 40 actually came with 5X15 or 6X16 front rims. One was optional I guess. Have a great Christmas!

JD 40T front wheel rim offset?

Am restoring a 53 JD 40T. Previous owner said the front wheel rims are off a Ford and have an offset of 2 1/2" which is too much offset to put wheels close together. The hub has 6 bolt holes on 6" centers, with a raised edge of 4.625" (4 5/8") for the rim opening. What is the correct offset...

    JD 40 Dash panel color

Thanks for the responses. What about using JD Blitz Black for the dash. Seems to be a semi-gloss black.

    JD 40 Dash panel color

I am restoring a 1953 model 40, s/n 67588. The dash panel and footrests are black. I know JD painted almost everything green, but should these parts be black or green. Thanks for your help.

    49 A split pedistol???

I think it will. I have a 49 A with a wide front end. Looking at the parts manual, The pedestal (part#AA3920R) and steering spindle (#AA3922R) are the same for a rollomatic and a wide front end.

Late A John Deere Dash Panel

I have a 49 Model A, gas, with delco distributor. The hole to the right of the lowest gage (oil press on mine) has a keyed ignition switch. The shutters, mentioned in another reply, on mine is controlled by a lever on the pedastel. Hope this helps.

    John Deere MT

JD made 25,845 of them from 49 to 53. I recently restored a 49 M. Was fairly easy and straight forward. Much easier than working on my A, primarily because parts are smaller and lighter. I had a lot of fun doing it. As far as weak points, some people have had problems with them running hot, but...

    1949 A

As 1951G says, the bolt, which is actually the oil level test cock, is below and just forward of the clutch pulley. Unless you know the history of the tractor. I would change all the lubricants. John Deere Operators manual recommends draining the oil, add 1 gallon of kerosene, run engine for...

How Hard are JD 420's carberators to fix?

Ben, Rebuilding a carb is not that difficult. I've done an A, M, and a 40 with good results. Go to Roberts carb repair, they have good prices and fast shipping. Look under carb parts (link on left side) for listing of carbs, click on your carb, you will then see an exploded view of your carb...

    IT versus JD

I agree with hayfarmer. I've bought 2 (M and 40) and worth every cent. 1000 times better than the IT. JD Heritage (www.jdheritage.net/DeerelyDeparted/Index_JS.asp) has an excellent selection of service, parts, and operator manuals, and they are FAST on shipping.

    John Deere A model question

The serial number should be a 6 digit number. If there is not a serial number, post a picture. Someone can give you a idea as to it's value.

NEEDING A LOT OF HELP ON 1952 MT!! JOHN T/CLOONEY/SITE GURU

Temp Gage - try this, remove sensor from block and put in pan of boiling water(or nearly so) and check reading. If still not reading, contact David Kempisky at North Otto Tractors for a replacement. Don't forget to drain coolant before pulling sensor. If it reads correctly - well..ll, thats a...

    new tires

I also do like Dave H, 2"X8" and drive pickup on it to break the bead, then crowbars to remove tire. Be careful of pinching tube if you plan on reusing. Much easier to do than the fronts (take them to tire place) When restoring a tractor, I pull off nearly everything down to the...
