    John Deere 55 combine

I had a 105 Corn Special Diesel, with a "new style" feeder house, a 444 head & 20 ft. soybean head. Got along fine, even in corn approaching 200 bpa, but think a 643 would have been all I would have wanted. Aside from the fact that a 4 row head simply won't fit, bear in mind that a 55 is...

    corn head grease in gearbox

What do you mean--Grease them every morning? My owners manual said grease once each season!! Maybe that's why you had to work on so many. If you didn't take the plug out of the top while greasing, you most likely ruined the seals with grease pressure!!!!!!!!

    420U Spindle Conundrum

There is a difference in the spindle length between a utility & standard. I'm betting the long one you bought,is from a standard, not utility.

March Green Mag, 24V positive ground article

I haven't as yet read all this article in GM, & I'm NOT an electrical engineer, however I've used & repaired these systems for about 50yrs. As far as I can see, everything that John T & the John Deere service bulletens is true. Is this system perfect? Of course not, but it worked well before 12...

    spin out wheels

Don't remember where I read it, but I'm pretty sure John Deere owned the patent for spin out wheels & AC paid JD a royalty on every tractor they built until that patent ran out.

    rod bearing size

I haven't looked at a parts book, but I'm pretty sure are all the rod bearings are the same, if standard size. As far as mains go, bear in mind that diesels have 7 mains, while gassers have only 4.

    Propane Prices

Filled mine on Jan 2, was $1.92 then, refilled about a week ago & haven't received the bill yet. Talked with the lady that woks at my local Co-op, Friday eve. She said that Propane went up $1.28 that Pm & was at $5.35. This is in north central Ia.

    36 A front hub

I put the hubs from a '48, or so "G" on a '36A a long time ago. Seems like there was a problem of them going on too far, that I solved with a spacer behind the inner bearing, but as I said, that was a long time ago. I'd think most any hubs from an "A" or "G" could be "made to fit", as the...

    Unstyled AO

I don't believe any unstyled JD tractors had a "road gear". There was an after market setup from Behlen available for row crop tractors, but don't know if they would fit a standard AO or AR. I'm assuming that your AO is a 4 speed & therefore wouldn't have a road gear. That being said, my 45 AO...

JD 40 Block heater or lower hose heater

I use a tank type heater on my 54 40U. Put a close nipple & tee in both the drain opening in the lower block & temp gauge opening in the head. Attach the hose adapters from the kit that comes with the heater in one side of the tee in each location & put the drain cock in the other side of tee &...

    3010 transmission

If I understand correctly, how the syncro-range transmission was designed, they ALL had the 3rd rev--and for that matter, 4th. I think the only real change was the elimination of the third notch in the shifter quadrant. If you want a REALLY "hairy" (& scary) reverse, figure out a way to access...

cutting hay with a mid mount sickle mower

Been a number of years since i cut hay, but as I remember it, with a #50 side mount on a 4010D, you cut all the way thru, make a sharp turn, and the cutter bar will enter & never leave anything uncut. This was the nicest mowing outfit I ever operated.

    730 rear wheels

The "fat" tires look much better to me & will put the 730's power to the ground much getter than the woefully undersized (for a 730) 13.6 tires.

    ID this disc please.

I believe this is an "RW". The RWA had a different style hitch with the hinge & spring back near the frame. We bought a new 19ft 2in BW in the early 60s & it's hitch was like this disc. Ours soon developed side play in the spring/adjustment area. JD soon changed the hitch style & renamed it RWA...
