    Flea market finds

In the 60's my Dad was a technician at a John Deere dealership. When I was 4 or 5 was when they started making the miniature tractors and implements. I remember having several pieces...except I was 5 years old and they were just toys at the time and of course I played with them. Sure wish I...

    Starter amp draw

Thanks for all the help guys. A new ground cable, a known good hot battery, and it came to life!!! Very happy with the tractor after this first start. No leaks, 30 psi oil pressure, temp running good. Needed very little carb adjustment for the engine to settle into a good idle. Shut it down...

    Starter amp draw

Thanks John. I don't know why I didn't think to check the voltage drop when cranking. And I will change the ground cable regardless. It looks pretty rough. And I will definitely attach it closer to the starter, I like that idea.

    Starter amp draw

First, thanks for all the good advice concerning the broken filter head on my A, got everything back together, although it was quite a chore doing it from the top. Anyhow, finally time for the first start. I had pulled the starter earlier in the project, cleaned it up and put new brushes in...

    A model oil filter head

Maark, the three bolts are already out, they pass through the bottom part of the filter head and screw into the top part. I've tried to remove the filter tube without success. I tried all the methods I found here, like the 5 gallon bucket bail wire. I made a slide hammer using 1/4 all thread...

    John Deere fasteners

Clutch head screws have a "bowtie" shaped recess for the driver to fit in. Over the years most have been lost and replaced with regular hex head cap screws. The A I'm working on now still has some of the original clutch head screws though!

    A model oil filter head

I’m having to replace the oil filter head on my A (s/n 596xxx), due to a previous owners heavy hand on the filter cap. I’ve removed the crankcase cover, disconnected the oil lines and removed the three bolts from inside the filter housing. The bottom half of the filter head remained attached...

    A model oil pump woes

Thanks for the replies guys. Got the %#@*%# thing off, and you guys were right, it is a bugger!! And I don't imagine going back is gonna be any easier!! A quarter size plug around the stud had pulled out of the casting. Guess I'm part hunting again!! One a positive note the crankcase is...

    A model oil pump woes

After posting I did more reading and now I'm confused even more!! Does the stud screw into the pump or is it screwed into the filter housing?? Thanks!!

    A model oil pump woes

Went to change oil before I started my "52 A for the first time, and found the oil filter stud was apparently stripped by the previous owner. I can"t get the stud to unscrew from the pump, it just spins. Can I get the oil pump out with the stud still attached?

    A Model clutch interchange

Thanks Mike and Pappy. After lots of PB Blaster and some hammer and punch work I got the rusted up clutch apart and it isn't as bad as I thought. If the drive and driven surfaces clean up all I may only have to buy the lined disk (the one with 3 ears). And Mike you're right. While this...

    A Model clutch interchange

FINALLY got the clutch assembly off the A. It is a badly rusted mess, the say the least. I have a good clutch assembly off an earlier tractor (S/N 562xxx). Does anyone know if the earlier model clutch assembly will interchange with my tractor (S/N 689xxx). The internals of the earlier clutch...
