AGM (acid glass mat) batteries on older farm machinery---can they take the charging system?

I've been hearing a lot about the newer AGM (acid glass mat) batteries. That's where they don't have "flooded" electrolyte like conventional batteries. Because all the acid is in a glass mat "sponge" between the plates. This has some advantages; such as faster charging, no acid leaks, no...

    Farmall C263 engine piston orientation

Ok---so now I'm trying to install the head on my Farmall 656 with C263 engine. I set the head on the block, and it won't go all the way down. It's hitting interference with the the step on the pistons. Can someone tell me what is the correct orientation for the pistons in these engines...

    Farmall C263 engine piston orientation

Found out what I did wrong. I ordered the wrong piston set. Apparently there's a "Fire Crater" type, and a "step-head" type. My engine had the Fire Crater pistons. Apparently, they must not be compatible in the same engine. Something with the cylinder head (?). Because the "step-head...

Farmall C263 engine---TIGHT crankshaft pulley install!

Follow up on this-- I measured the crankshaft nose at about 1.5105. The inside of the pulley hub at about 1.4960. I took it to my machinist, and he honed about .0015 out of the hub. It helped a lot. I also got a new nut. (It takes a castellated 1 14-thread GRADE 8 nut.) It still fit...

Farmall C263 engine---TIGHT crankshaft pulley install!

Trying to install the crankshaft pulley on my Farmall 656 C263 engine. Pulley is going on very tight. Is this normal for these engines? It was hard getting it off in the first place. Had to use an impact on the 1 inch castellated nut. And then a bearing puller. Before re-installing, I...

Farmall 656 C263 engine head gasket---which side up?

Yes it goes copper side up. The other way, it covers the oil port for the rockers. And the coolant passages don't line up. I will be using copper head gasket spray on the gasket.

Farmall 656 C263 engine head gasket---which side up?

I'm getting ready to put the head back on my Farmall 656 C263 engine. Unfortunately the head gasket I have doesn't have any markings that I can see, as to which side is supposed to be up. One side is copper coated. And it also has the cylinder fire rings on it. The other side is silver...

Farmall 656 C263 engine head gasket---which side up?

You are right. Put on one way, it covers the oil port for the rockers. It goes copper side up.

    Farmall 656 C263 camshaft/crankshaft timing marks?

Hello! I'm reassembling my Farmall C263 gas engine. I need to know how the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft gear are supposed to be set. The camshaft has one dot on the gear. The crankshaft gear has 2 dots one place, and one on another place. (See picture). Surprisingly, this...

Farmall C263 engine---TIGHT crankshaft pulley install!

Good advice. I'm going to measure the crankshaft end with my micrometer. That's where the tightness is coming from. I'm then going to take the pulley to my machinist and have him bore it a oversize a couple of thousandths. Because it is fitting way to tight. Far tighter than it needs to for...

Farmall C263 conn rod bolts---PLACE or PITCH?

I'm keeping the thread busy today! I posted a question a few posts down about connecting rod bolts on my Farmall C263 engine. There was a question as to whether I have PLACE or PITCH bolts. (Each type takes a different torque). According to the IT manual, the PLACE bolt has a head that is...

    Farmall 656 C263 camshaft/crankshaft timing marks?

Thanks for the reply. Yes I noticed that too. After a couple of calls, I finally found an (retired) IH mechanic (most of the younger ones I spoke seem clueless about these engines). He confirmed that it is dot to dot.

    Farmall 656 C263 engine overhaul---replace connecting ro

Vet---thanks for the reply. Yes I saw that in the book about the two different types of bolts. I'm thinking I have the PITCH bolt. Because in the book it is described as standard bolt head with washer face. And thread diameter is larger than the shank (which it sort of seems to be). The...

    Farmall 656 C263 engine overhaul---replace connecting ro

I'm overhauling my Farmall 656 with C263 engine. In the process of putting it back together. Should the connecting rod bolts be replaced with new ones? The current ones look just fine. But wanted to ask experts here if this is something that should be done as part of an engine rebuild. They...

    Farmall 656 C263 engine overhaul---replace connecting ro

Thanks for the advice, Red. Glad to hear I shouldn't need to replace them. Tractor is used for just ordinary field work.
