calcium chloride in tires from factory

I recently picked up a model M and in reading the operator's manual it said the tires come from the factory filled with calcium chloride. Does anyone know this to be true? The rear tires are badly cracked and I'd like to replace them. Sounds like I'd be getting into a real mess.

    hauling N's

I haul my 843 Bobcat (6500#) on a 5 ton trailer behind my 2005 Sierra w/ 4.8L, automatic. It does have a tow package, and electric brakes. I figure I'm about at 10,000# gross. Generally it not about moving- it's about stopping. I'd wonder more about the trailer than the truck. Of course for a...

    clutch mystery

It's not a mystery. Lots of pressure from your pressure plate hold the clutch disc against your flywheel to drive your tractor along. When you park it all that pressure is still being applied. After it's been sitting a while moisture/rust binds the clutch disc to your flywheel. Some people call...

    kohler 582

I've got a Bobcat 530 with the same engine. One time the fiber gear on the governor wore so that there was slop in the keyway and it threw off the timing. There's a 1/4" pipe plug in the gear case at the governor where you should be able to check the gear for play. At top center a beveled tooth...

    8n balance point

Thanks everyone. I'm going to have to do exactly the opposite of everything I did today. This trailer is a 16' low bed, 10K# tandem. We picked it off a junk pile in a guy's backyard. Another one of those drive by finds. We converted from surge to electric brakes, from pintle to 2&516" coupler...

    8n balance point

I trailered my 8N for the first time today. I backed it unto the trailer and centered the gearshift between the tandems. I thought that I had a little more tongue weight than I'd like. Anyone know where the center is for an 8n without loaded tires or weights?

How does a governor actually work....?

You must have spun some marbles in a dish as a kid right? Your hand held the dish in place and the marbles climbed up the wall of the dish. Well now as the balls in the governor spin the dish is what moves. The balls travel in a fixed plane and the dish presses against a fork that rotates a...

    8n 12 volt battery

You might want to take a test light and ground it to the engine and put the business end on your positive battery post. Hit the starter. If the light goes out and it doesn't crank put the ground clip on your neg battery post. Hit the starter. If the light stays lit and it doesn't crank you've...

    More about Head Bolts

Back in the day (LONG before global warming and ozone depletion were concerns) there wasn't much that was so stuck that a good blast of liquid R-12 refrigerant wouldn't shrink enough to unstick. We'd even shrink crank journals to slide roller bearings on rather than use a press.

    Winter cover

Did you figure out what the grommets and twistlocks were for?

    Winter cover

Does anyone have a picture of a correctly installed winter cover for the 8N that can be purchased on this site? Twist-lock section to front? Wrapped around front axle? Bumper inside or out of cover? Radius rods inside or out? Dress left or right (lol)? Thanks, Pip

    straight pipe

Fixing up my new 8N the last few days I noticed the muffler nearly crushed shut in the middle. Maybe a snow pile or rock or something? My friend Ernie suggests a straight pipe. We've had lots of marine and farm engines running un-muffled so I figure - Why not? Put a straight vertical pipe on the...

    bad luck

I've had mice build nests in the shrouds of different air cooled engines. I always just cut a coat hanger into a hook and fished out all I could. Every now and then one would expire in there. In your case maybe you'll have some bio-fuel there (lol). Wash it out if it ever warms up.

    Fuel line fittings Red Kote

Thanks- will do. It's a funny thing but this tractor feels "fast" to me. I've had 3 Power Kings- all with dual trannys- that I could set low-low and hop off, leave'm and go to lunch and they'd still be there when I got back. I had a Struck crawler that I could outcrawl when it was in 4th. I've...
