So I have the flywheel in the freezer right now. Plan to put ring gear in the oven tomorrow but not sure what heat to use. Last one I did I set he oven to 500 degrees but it almost fell off the back side so thinking maybe 350 degrees.

So does that sound about right or do I need to go hotter??
Thanks

Old ring gear came off pretty easy with a punch and going say 10 degrees at a time around the gear.

Most instructions I have read say around 300 degrees. I heat them with a torch evenly until the oil film on them starts to smoke which is roughly 350. I do not chill the flywheel. Never had a problem.

Ditto what Cliff stated. Never chilled flywheel and ring gear slide right in place after heating with a torch. Be sure and face ring gear correctly on FW.

Nothing wrong with chilling the flywheel. Probably has an almost negligible effect, but it can't hurt.

I have a freezer in the shop, so it's easy to set the flywheel in the freezer ahead of time, and take it out just before taking the ring gear out of the oven.

Just a few days ago I replaced the ring gear on a Chevy medium truck flywheel with a 13" clutch, those can be a bugger sometimes.

I chilled the flywheel and heated the ring gear, grabbed the ring gear with a pliers and set it on the flywheel with no issues. It actually took a half.minute or so for it to shrink enough so you couldn't turn it on the flywheel.

Same with a 4620, a while back.
