just got a 9n with no generator on it still 6 volt
any input on changing to 12 volt or just buy another generator what all do you need to convert
thanks-vince

Convert and get it over with.

[i:654c4848f0]*12V spins your engine much faster and starts it better in all conditions, especially if it is very cold or if the engine has marginal compression.
*12V with an alternator is more reliable and uses a solid state VR instead of an old fashioned system of points, coils and electromagnets to regulate the charging voltage.
Solid state is better, more accurate, more dependable.
*12V is more forgiving of dirty contacts on/in the entire wiring harness.
*12v is the industry standard and has been for 50 years.
*12v allows you to run sprayer pumps, flashing lights, winches and a host of other modern accessories on your tractor.
*12V lights are brighter.
*A 12v alternator will easily put out more amps than an old fashioned generator and vr.
*An alternator will charge at an idle. Generator generally will not.
*A 12v system is safer. For example, Most people know how to jump a 12v negative ground car, truck or tractor. Not many people know how to safely jump a 6v positive ground tractor with a 12 battery without something exploding in their faces or getting themselves run over.
*6v requires bigger, harder to find wires and cables throughout the system.
*12v batteries are to be found just about anywhere, are cheaper than 6v and are usually maintenance free.
* And last but not least, is this your only 6V machine?
What kind of battery is in your boat, your RV, your classic car or even your 4 wheeler or snowmobile if you have them? Why have an odd ball battery that can't jump or be jumped by anything else? [/i:654c4848f0]

if you got no genny.. then I'd look at the battery.

right now you are at the point where a 45$ alternator and a 70$ battery and some wire and a ressitor will get you going.

OR a bit more than that for a generator, repop. maybee less if you can find a used one from someone converting.

if your 6v bat is old. I think I might go 12 at this point.

the oem 6v coil, plus the oe ballast ressitor, plus a conversion resistor.. 8ne10306. OR get a 2.5 ohm coil and the oe resistor.

or gut your old coil and get a napa ic14sb rond can coil and loose all the resistors.

lotsa ways.

brackets you can cut n weld n drill.. easy..

When the internal regulator fails in your wonderful alternator it will blow the caps off the battery. The battery will bulge and have to be replaced. My generator has been working for 25 years with just a few drops of oil .Your alternator is not designed to run exposed to the weather. My tractor starts fine in cold weather. An engine in good tune does not have to spin fast to start. My sprayer has its on 12v battery.I use my boat battery on the sprayer.Cant use the boat and sprayer at the same time.I have had to boost the tractor one time with a 12v pak out in the woods.I am smart enough to go directly to the starter with 12 volts.Your 12v battery has 6 cells that increases the chance of failure.Last but not least I avoid spending money when I dont have to.

I've not ever seen a battery with the caps blown off -- and Delco alternators generally fail safely (they just quit charging).

With no generator present, I'd convert. If you don't know enough to do it yourself, buy one of the kits that are available.

Your 6v regulator is another unknown factor. If it's bad its another expense. I would just change to a 3 wire Delco 10si 12 volt set up as described. This alternator has been used on all types of equipment for many years.

thanks for help does anyone know which generator
1945 ford 2n takes I saw two 1 with 1 terminal
and 1 with 3 terminals ?

I had 2 Delco alternators blow the caps off and bulge the battery on my wifes cars.Never say never. The boiling batteries stink. That the first clue.Wife comes in an says the car smells funny.Happened to a Chevy and an Olds.

(quoted from post at 05:35:44 05/30/13) Tell us how you can put the headlites in series.
ery simple run hot wire to first headlight run ground from that light to hot wire of second light 6+6 =12. I've run mine this way for five years works good and seem to be brighter.

thanks I saw cutout relay how would generator be
wired it looks like 1 wire is there is that all
thanks

36, so we should revert everything back to 6 volts and generators?

Just leave things alone that are working ok.Convert it to 24 volt, that will smoke the old 6 volt starter.

I had nothing to do with these overcharge failures.I had to fix them and many more like them.I was working in a Ford garage when the 57 Ford was new.Where were you in 1956.The internal regulators do fail.

Compliments of forum member JMOR.
If you can't see the picture well enough, just google JMOR wiring diagram.
Where are you located? Many of us probably have a good genny if
you choose to go that way.

500,000 N tractors were built with 6 volt systems. My 6 volt tractor starts and does work I need done.I see no need to convert to 12 volts.

The cutout should be marked B or Bat for the battery wire.If you connect wrong the generator wont charge. The cutout frame must be well grounded to work properly.
