The lifts on this tractor hasnt been used in years, only the pto. Now they wont move at all. The first, second thing to look for? Thanks

I have a 165. Start by changing the hydraulic oil and servicing the filter. On a 165 this is neither a rational or pleasant experience. If my memory serves me you start by taking the foot rest off and then the controls to get to the filter.

Hello,
Changing the oil may be an unnecessary expense.
It would be better to carry out a couple of checks to try and find out where the problem/s are. Slacken both plugs on the left handside of the casing. Ease both plugs to one side slightly and check for presence on water. No water...good, water....not so good! Drain the oil to the level of the bottom bolt on the right hand round cover. Remove the cover. You may need to disconnect the brake rod and remove the footplate. Operate the quadrant controls and you should see the linkage move in response. If for example the pump lever is stuck in the leaning forward position and the lever that should be in contact is free then the control valve is seized. You may be able to free it by exerting light finger pressure in either direction. If the pump lever is working in response to the quadrant levers (3-pt down) then there is a possibility that the cylinder bore under the cover may be rusty. Does the tractor have an isolating valve fitted at the front of the hydraulic cover? If not there will just be a cap retained by two bolts. If so make sure that the control is set to the 'internal' position.
If everything appears OK with the internal linkage, remove the left hand cover. At this point it would be advisable to drain the remainder of the oil. In side you will see/feel the filter behind the pump. It should have a locking wire from the rear pump plate. Cut the wire and unscrew the filter assembly. There is a cup over the top of the filter and one below with an O ring under it. Try and lift the whole assemble off as one. The filter can be washed out or replaced if necessary. Refit carefully and fit new locking wire. Heavy duty domestic electrical copper wire is a suitable alternative.
Replace the oil back to the level of the bottom bolt and test. When the quadrant levers are in the 'up' position the pump lever should be fully rearwards. You should at least have some response from the 3-pt linkage.
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Scott, I was kinda figuring on changing the filter, but looks like this thing should do something. It dosnt even try.

Thanks David, This thing is a real basket case that my Dad used to pull a sawmill with. I dont have a book on this thing yet, but I dont think a book would point out things like you have. It runs great, if I can get past the lifts the rest if just basic hard work. I think/hope. Thanks a bunch.
